AI-assisted compiler and validator for genuine retro-computing assets.
RetroAsset turns generated, imported or hand-authored source material into assets that obey the constraints of real retro platforms. The goal is not merely to make modern images look retro.
M0 is release-ready as RetroAsset 0.1.0.
The qualified M0 baseline includes native Amiga OCS/ECS/AGA profiles and exporters, ANSI/CP437 with SAUCE metadata, and C64 PETSCII/screen assets with raw and PRG export. Amiga and C64 outputs have emulator/runtime qualification in CI.
Planned target families include:
- Amiga OCS / ECS / AGA
- ANSI / IBM CP437
- Commodore PETSCII
- Atari ATASCII
- Atari ST
- DOS EGA / VGA
- Mac68k

AI is optional and provider-independent. Native target validation remains deterministic.
python -m pip install -e .

retroasset validate examples/amiga-ocs-sprite.jsonExpected validation result:
PASS
See ARCHITECTURE.md for the design.
RetroAsset is also designed to run as a reproducible OCI toolchain. The image uses an Alpine/Python baseline and runs as an unprivileged user.
The stable container I/O contract is:
- mount source assets read-only at
/work/input - mount generated assets read-write at
/work/output - invoke the same
retroassetCLI used by native installations
Example after the image has been published:
docker run --rm \
-v "$PWD/examples:/work/input:ro" \
-v "$PWD/output:/work/output" \
ghcr.io/ploos-as/retroasset:0.1.0 \
export /work/input/amiga-ocs-checker.json \
--target amiga-ocs --format ilbm -o /work/output/checker.ilbmPublished images target linux/amd64 and linux/arm64. Release workflows produce immutable sha-* tags, semantic-version tags, and edge for main. Qualification and reproducible builds should prefer immutable tags rather than edge.
The baseline image contains no AI provider runtime, proprietary ROMs, AmigaOS files, or other licensed machine firmware.
