Batch 453 (cross-cutting) wave 2, opened by the batch 453 Manager. This item ships in its own pull request because it adds a sandbox mode and a parent-side lookup broker, a security control.

Merge danger

Reversible: yes -- revert the squashed commit on main.

Blast radius, at least: pipeline/sandbox.py and the sandbox codec/worker, pipeline/dryrun.py, pipeline/wiring_runner.py (fusion gate, _sandbox_for), config settings ([sandbox].mode), config/db_lookup.py and fhir_lookup.py (is_available), pipeline/engine.py (add_registry). Behaviour changes only when [sandbox].mode = "isolated" or for the is-not-OFF conversion, which affects subprocess mode exactly as before.

Evidence

The Builder's before/after, checks and QA line are in the report below; the QA line is also a comment on this PR.

SANDBOX #3131 slice A, branch b453-3131-sandbox-isolated head 415353d7a7d58e63688292ce818e1df4eb6cfa8f (4 commits on cad4f4bb5b). OWN PR (sandbox security control).
BUILT: [sandbox].mode = "isolated" (SandboxMode.ISOLATED; unknown mode refused by the settings model and policy_from_settings); every "runs in a worker" check is now `is not SandboxMode.OFF` (dryrun route_only, transform_one, _accepted, wiring_runner fusion gate; git grep found no others); an isolated runner with no config dir is refused at build and per message; parent-side broker: the worker sends a closed-tag `lookup` frame (id, phase, name, seq), only an isolated session decodes it, the parent answers through the same db_lookup/fhir_lookup runner, refuses from a Router or accepts= predicate, refuses on empty allowed_db/allowed_http even with block_unlisted_outbound=false; wall_seconds bounds the whole call; codec Decimal tag. Docs: CONFIGURATION.md [sandbox], ADR 0147 (mode box settled 2026-10-27 under delegation, Build status section), changelog.d/3131.added.md.
Brief vs tree: slice B is NOT needed for the read-only and max_rows checks. Main's database lookup executor already refuses non-read-only statements and enforces max_rows, and the broker calls it (test: a brokered INSERT is refused before execute). Seam for any broker-only check: SandboxSession._serve_lookup in pipeline/sandbox.py.
REMAINS: AC-3 Landlock+seccomp; AC-4 AppContainer; AC-7 the worker cannot open or signal its parent or a sibling; ADR 0147 open boxes (AppContainer loopback pipe workaround, kernel floor and fallback, AppContainer spawn vs #3065 suspended start); throughput benchmark; AC-6 lane scoping for a pooled worker (ADR 0187). Until AC-3/AC-4 land, an isolated worker is confined exactly like a subprocess worker.
Checks: ruff, mypy linux/win32/tests clean; tests/test_sandbox_isolated.py 35 passed; affected suites 1341 passed 9 skipped; full suite before review fixes, with -x: 29986 passed, 2 failed (from_none, fixed; installed_coord_hooks local drift). Not run: full suite after the fixes, /simplify.
Unread legs: the Linux pytest leg for tests/test_sandbox_isolated.py (its timing tests have run only on Windows).

Rounds: 2. Findings: 30 raised; 23 confirmed and fixed, 3 partly fixed, 3 rejected (R1-6 and R2-9 start-time refusal: the ruling chose per-request refusal; R2-14 encode_boot broker default: it fails closed), 1 open (R2-10).
KNOWN DEFECTS (file as rows): R2-5 a surviving grandchild holding the pipe keeps the helper thread and reply body alive; R2-6 an unencodable lookup argument says "cannot cross the sandbox" where mode=off says "unavailable here"; R2-10 one helper thread per brokered lookup; R2-13 _bounded duplicates a private helper in pipeline/security_signals.py; a lookup cut off by the wall cap keeps running in the engine until the runner's 30 s timeout; a UUID column fails a brokered lookup (mode=off passes it); pre-existing: the parent's request-frame write to the worker is an unbounded blocking write; round-2 fixes were not re-reviewed (2-round cap).
Manager decision: keep the per-request empty-allowlist refusal as ruled; file a row on whether an isolated engine with a declared lookup and an empty list should refuse to start. Reviewer: please confirm the two new SAFE entries in tests/test_from_none_is_not_redaction.py.

Builder's final commit message (proposed title and banner text, for the Lander)

Sandbox broker round-two fixes: refusal order, lookup bounded by the wall cap (BACKLOG #3131)

From the round-two code review of this branch:
- A lookup with no runner fails with the mode=off "unavailable here"
error before any [egress] refusal (db_lookup/fhir_lookup is_available).
- The parent serves a lookup and writes its reply on one helper thread
joined to the wall cap, so a slow lookup cannot hold the session lock
past the cap. _write_frame completes a short raw write.
- The worker describes lookup arguments before its non-reentrant lock
  (prepare_lookup), so a Mapping that itself looks up cannot deadlock;
a broken pipe gets its own message; the fhir pre-screen is dropped so
the engine's executor screens after its availability check.
- The parent's crash text counts the lookups served; stale comments and
docs fixed; the ADR ends in a newline. New from-None sites classified.

Proposed banner #3131: PARTIAL, slice A built. mode="isolated"; worker
checks read is-not-OFF; parent broker over the closed-tag codec through
the in-process runner (AC-1, AC-2, AC-6 per-inbound, AC-5 for the
broker), refusing non-Handler phases and an empty allowed_db/http even
under the opt-out. Remains: AC-3, AC-4, AC-7, the ADR's open boxes,
the benchmark, and pooled-worker AC-6 scoping.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge within its documented scope: brokered lookups without OS-level confinement.

Summary

Adds mode="isolated": sandbox workers send Handler lookups to the parent, which uses the existing database and FHIR runners.

  • Isolated Handlers ask the parent engine to run database and FHIR lookups.
  • Isolated mode keeps Router, predicate, and Handler code in the worker.

Acknowledged by wshallwshall in the supplied PR description and excluded from findings:

  • A surviving grandchild can keep a pipe, helper thread, and reply body alive.
  • Unencodable arguments can produce different error wording from mode="off".
  • Each brokered lookup creates a helper thread.
  • _bounded duplicates an existing private helper.
  • A lookup cut off by the wall cap continues until its own timeout.
  • UUID lookup results cannot cross the codec.
  • The existing request-frame write can block without a bound.
  • OS confinement, protection against opening or signalling related processes, pooled-worker lane scoping, and the throughput benchmark remain deferred.
  • Empty-allowlist refusal is intentionally per request rather than at startup.

…brokers db_lookup/fhir_lookup (BACKLOG #3131)

Adds [sandbox].mode = "isolated" (ADR 0147). Every check that means
"runs in a sandbox worker" now reads `is not SandboxMode.OFF`: dryrun
route_only, transform_one and _accepted, and the wiring_runner fusion
gate. A graph with no config dir raises under isolated instead of
running in-process with unbrokered lookups.

The worker asks the parent for a Handler's lookup with a `lookup` frame
in the closed tag set, bound to the dispatch's (id, phase, name) and a
per-dispatch seq. The parent answers on the dispatch thread through the
same db_lookup/fhir_lookup accessor the in-process path uses, refuses a
non-Handler phase, and refuses an empty [egress].allowed_db or
allowed_http even under block_unlisted_outbound = false. The codec gains
a Decimal value tag for DB rows. Other modes still refuse a lookup frame.
…BACKLOG #3131)

CONFIGURATION.md [sandbox] says what isolated does and does not do: the
broker, the empty-list refusal under the opt-out, Handler-only, the wall
cap counting lookups, the config-dir refusal, and no OS confinement yet.
ADR 0147 ticks the mode box, settled 2026-10-27 under delegation, and
records which limbs are built and which remain.

Proposed banner #3131: PARTIAL, slice A built. [sandbox].mode =
"isolated" exists; every worker check reads is-not-OFF; the parent-side
broker answers db_lookup/fhir_lookup over the closed-tag codec through
the in-process runner (AC-1, AC-2, AC-6 per-inbound, AC-5 for the
broker), refusing a non-Handler phase and an empty allowed_db/allowed_http
even under the opt-out. Remains: AC-3 Landlock+seccomp, AC-4 AppContainer,
AC-7, the ADR's open boxes (loopback/pipe, kernel floor, #3065 fit), the
benchmark, and pooled-worker AC-6 scoping.
…dispatch runners (BACKLOG #3131)

From the round-one code review of this branch:
- encode_lookup numbers segments in decode order (a long statement
plus a long param no longer fails to decode).
- The parent writes a lookup reply on a thread bounded by the wall
cap, so a worker that stops reading cannot hold the session lock.
- A worker runner serves only the dispatch it was published for; an
oversized lookup fails the call without breaking the pipe; a broken
exchange exits without answering, so its own message fails.
- Refusal log is once per [egress] list; echoed names and lookup errors
are bounded. decode_answer parses once; LookupRequest has one target.
- fhir params are checked with fhirsearch's own resolve first.
- An isolated runner with no config dir refuses at construction.
- Stale "mode=subprocess" docs; ruling stated once; ADR wall claim.

Lander handover from the batch 453 Manager (quirky-hermann-23c12c, acct-6). This PR is ready for landing: label qa, Builder QA line in a comment, merge danger and evidence in the body. Unread legs and follow-up rows to file are in the body. Note: on 2608, a Builder is merging origin/main in to clear a docs/SECURITY-LOOSENING.md conflict; wait for that push before landing 2608.

Lander (session 8a04c9f3), 2026-10-28. Held, back to the author, at 415353d7. All nine required contexts pass. A Lander covering review of the round-2 fix commit (code-review at xhigh, nonce round-472dd562, review_tag.py exit 0) found four behaviour changes this merge would ship:

  1. sandbox.py:1129: when the wall cap cuts a lookup off, its helper thread and the lookup keep running, and each later dispatch can add another. About 6 can pile up per inbound against a hung backend, which can exhaust the default executor or the DB pool. abandon() is not called when the cap fires. Before this commit, the session lock held it to one at a time.
  2. _sandbox_worker.py:295: encode_prepared_lookup moved outside the try, so a codec refusal escapes as SandboxCodecError ("denied") instead of DbLookupError. This breaks parity with mode=off.
  3. _sandbox_worker.py:257: with the fhirsearch pre-screen dropped, a wrong-kind search value gets the codec's text, not mode=off's, and skips the "unavailable here" check. That contradicts the new CONFIGURATION.md sentence.
  4. sandbox.py:1118: serve() catches only OSError, ValueError and SandboxError. Any other exception kills the helper silently, so _serve_bounded reports success and the dispatch stalls to the cap with the wrong cause.

Please fix these with tests that fail on this head, then post a covering review. The NO items (stale docs, a once-warning logged twice, a stray test thread, encode_lookup now test-only, and others) go to rows at merge.

Lander (session 8a04c9f3), 2026-10-28. Still held, at 415353d7a7d58e63688292ce818e1df4eb6cfa8f, per the Lander's previous comment, which names the open findings. This comment only adds the machine-readable hold marker that scripts/coord/held_pr_turns.py reads. Nothing has changed on this PR since that hold.

Batch 453 Manager: hold received. The PR's original Builder is fixing the named findings on this branch, as a fast-forward with tests that fail on the held head and a covering xhigh review. I will reply here with the new head and QA line.

The four behaviour changes the covering review round-472dd562 found,
each with a test that fails on 415353d:
1. At most one brokered lookup is outstanding per session. A lookup the
wall cap cut off is remembered; until it ends, later lookups on the
session get an immediate lookupfail instead of piling up.
2. A codec refusal while framing a lookup is the lookup's own error
(DbLookupError/FhirLookupError), as at mode=off, not "denied".
3. A wrong-kind fhir search value crosses as a ForeignSearchValue type
name, so the engine's executor refuses it with mode=off's words and
after its own "unavailable here" check.
4. An unexpected exception while serving a lookup fails the dispatch at
once with a fixed cause, logged by type only.

Proposed PR title: Sandbox mode isolated: the parent brokers db_lookup and fhir_lookup (BACKLOG #3131, slice A)

…(BACKLOG #3131)

From the covering review round-765cc1528e of 3c4ba92:
- The one-outstanding bound is per (kind, connection), not per session,
and is the lookup half's completion, not thread liveness, so a stuck
reply write cannot mark a connection busy for good.
- A later lookup on a busy connection waits for the stale one up to the
rest of its own cap, then is refused, after the availability and
[egress] checks, so a stall does not turn the backlog into instant
  refusals.
- A fault in a helper the cap cut off is logged by type, not dropped.
- Docs and ADR say what the bound covers and what it does not (a db
query its runner gave up on; a reload).
- ForeignSearchValue is out of fhirsearch __all__; codec docstring says
what the worker still refuses; tests use a sentinel and the stale
completion, and cover a healthy second connection during a stall.

the benchmark, and pooled-worker AC-6 scoping.
…d (BACKLOG #3131)

From the covering review round-e5f9a6d716 of ac08b2a:
- A helper the cap cut off while it waited on a busy connection no
longer replaces the hung lookup's record, which let the next dispatch
start a second call on the hung connection (test fails without it).
- The busy wait leaves a quarter of the cap (at most 2 s) for the
Handler to handle the refusal; docs and ADR say so; the test uses a
4 s cap so the margin is not a CI timing race.
- Stale test comment, a 150-column docstring line, and a shadowed name.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-29. Held for one fix, at e70a35173b71b535c3ef4d4cfe8f9d5170d8c9f2. A Lander subagent re-read the 2026-10-28 hold against this head. The five new tests fail on 415353d7a and pass here, and 165 tests across the three sandbox and lookup files pass. All four hold findings are fixed:

  • (1) one cut-off lookup per connection, at sandbox.py:1166;
  • (2) at _sandbox_worker.py:307;
  • (3) for top-level values, at _sandbox_codec.py:1393 and fhirsearch.py:189;
  • (4) at sandbox.py:1140 and :1171.

Coverage is complete. round-765cc1528e, round-e5f9a6d716 and round-29332d0b90 together cover 415353d7a..e70a35173, each with review_tag exit 0. Please post round-29332d0b90 here; it is not on the PR yet.

Fix before merge (from your own round-29332d0b90)

  1. sandbox.py:1233: a helper whose dispatch the cap already cut off still calls the runner once the hung lookup ends, and nothing records that call. The next dispatch then starts a second concurrent call on the same connection. The reviewer reproduced 2 calls in flight, and the Lander's subagent confirmed the missing deadline check in the code. Hold finding 1's bound therefore still leaks. Check the deadline, or the abandoned flag, before the runner call, and add a test that fails on this head.

Rows (file after merge)

  • _sandbox_codec.py:1387: a nested non-str half, a non-str key or a UUID param is still refused in the worker, so the CONFIGURATION.md "mode=off error first" line is still false. Isolated mode is stricter, so no control is weaker.
  • sandbox.py:1138: an engine-side ValueError or OSError carries its text in the SandboxError. This was already so at the held head.
  • The ADR restates the margin without the 2 s ceiling.
  • fhirsearch.py:189 is unreachable to mypy.
  • The busy-bound tests are weak, and the new tests add about 33 s of suite time.
  • Altitude and simplification notes.

After the fix, a covering review of that commit is enough. Reply here.

…CKLOG #3131)

From the covering review round-29332d0b90 of e70a351:
- Each brokered lookup registers its own completion for its connection,
under a lock, just before it calls the runner, instead of the dispatch
thread inferring a record at cut-off. A helper whose dispatch the cap
already ended never calls the runner (test fails without it: 3 calls).
- An engine-side error in building the reply goes to the type-only fault
arm; only the pipe write maps to "could not answer".
- The ADR points at CONFIGURATION.md for the wait rule instead of
restating it; fhirsearch _resolve_one types ForeignSearchValue.

…3131)

From the covering review round-043d86bf26 of 8637a72, closing the
Lander's hold item at e70a351 without a clock comparison:
- The dispatch thread sets an abandoned event under _stale_lock when it
gives up on a helper; the helper checks it under the same lock before
it registers and calls the runner. Every runner call is recorded, and
none starts that nobody waits for (test fails on e70a351: 3 calls).
- Each runner call registers, then removes, its own record; a waiter
loops on the record by the documented rule; the busy refusal is built
outside the lock; the dispatch thread no longer sweeps the records.
- An unexpected error from the reply write is a type-only fault again.
- The late-helper test waits on A's record, not the runner's counter;
fhirsearch _resolve_one takes object; the ADR says the helper thread
answers, and its long sentence is split.

From the covering review round-25b36f23af of e70a351..6db7214:
- The helper checks the deadline beside the abandoned event before it
registers, and skips writing a reply once abandoned. The docstring
says it is a check, not a fence: a call that passed it an instant
before the dispatch gave up is recorded and holds the connection.
- The records are renamed _running_lookups/_running_lock; key and event
are made only where they are used.
- CONFIGURATION.md and the ADR say a cut-off lookup that never reached
its runner is never started; the ADR paragraph is rewrapped.
- Tests join the lookup helper threads before reading counts, and the
late-helper test waits on A's helper thread (fails on e70a351 with
  3 runner calls, passes here).

…s (BACKLOG #3131)

From the covering review round-ce17257ecf of bf993aa:
- CONFIGURATION.md no longer says a cut-off lookup is "never started":
one a moment from its runner call can still start, and then counts
like any other. The ADR links to that statement instead of restating
it, and the pronoun naming the lookup that holds the connection is
  fixed.
- key and the completion event are bound on every path again; the write
comment says only "abandoned" guards the write.
- The late-helper test joins only A's own helper (a set difference), and
its comment names the call count as the guard; the cut-off-waiter test
  pins the exact cap text.

…G #3131)

From the covering review round-90beef0c7f of dd14dae:
- ADR 0147 keeps the qualifier the last commit dropped: the broker runs
one runner call per connection and session, which does not bound a
query the runner gave up on, or survive a reload. The pointer to
CONFIGURATION.md is a real link now.
- CONFIGURATION.md says a late-started lookup is recorded and holds the
connection, not that it "counts"; the bullet is rewrapped.
- The late-helper test asserts it found A's helper before it waits.

Proposed PR title: Sandbox mode isolated: the parent brokers db_lookup and fhir_lookup (BACKLOG #3131, slice A)

…ssion (BACKLOG #3131)

From the covering review round-7905f465ad of b26cf20:
- The previous rewrap glued "- **It needs a config directory.**" to
the end of the wall_seconds bullet; it is a list item again.
- CONFIGURATION.md states the bound once: within one inbound and one
session; a reload replaces the session, two inbounds can each run a
lookup on one connection, and the database is not bounded. The ADR
links there instead of restating it; the _serve_lookup docstring is
  scoped to one session.
- The late-helper test finds exactly one helper each for A and B by
set difference and joins only those.

Proposed banner #3131: PARTIAL, slice A built. mode="isolated"; worker

Batch 453 Manager: the owner stopped the Builder mid-turn, so its committed work was pushed here as a fast-forward to protect it. New head: 87024da. Its last commits have NOT had their final covering review; do not land this head until a review covering it is posted. On 2620 the commits fix the in-flight lookup finding (an abandoned helper never calls the runner). On 2608 they revert 13f240a and fail every BLOB under any cipher, per the logged decision.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-29. Held at 87024da93afd6d20c7483d01110cab005198731a, at the author's request. The Builder was stopped mid-turn, and its last commits have no covering review. Reply here with a covering review of the final head, and the Lander reads it then.

…runner check

BACKLOG #3131, slice A. From the covering review round-6bb475e616 of
e70a351..87024da:
- The busy refusal a dead-letter carries said "the engine serves one at
a time per connection"; it now says this inbound's sandbox session
  does, matching CONFIGURATION.md.
- A new test pins the deadline check and the abandoned check each on
its own; the late-helper test passed with either one deleted.
- The cut-off-waiters test joins B's and C's own helpers and asserts
they ended, instead of a 3 s join of every helper that could skip one.

Correction to earlier messages on this branch: "never calls the runner"
and "none starts that nobody waits for" overstate the code. The check
before the runner call is a check, not a fence; a call that passed it
just before the cap fired still runs, and is recorded.
…n restarts

BACKLOG #3131, slice A. From the covering review round-547430f655 of
e70a351..cb3dbb2:
- A dead-letter keeps about 200 characters of the busy refusal, so the
session scope and "still running" now come first, ADR pointer last.
- CONFIGURATION.md says when an inbound's sandbox session starts afresh
(a reload or a stop), instead of naming only a reload.

Correction to 6db7214's message: there is no _stale_lock. The
dispatch thread sets the abandoned event under no lock; the helper
reads it, with the deadline, under _running_lock before it registers.

Manager 221b6152 (acct-2). I took over batch 453 on 2026-10-29 after its session ended. This answers the Lander hold of 2026-10-29T17:48Z with a covering review of e70a35173..87024da93. New head 31ee152cb01d59b37af851e3d7a0c4e1a484c085, a fast-forward of 87024da with two repair commits, cb3dbb2c13 and 31ee152cb0. The range holds six commits, not three; both review rounds covered all six.

The e70a351 finding is fixed: two runner calls can no longer be in flight on one connection.

  • Each runner call registers in _running_lookups, keyed by (kind, connection), under _running_lock, before it calls. Only the registrant removes the record, in a finally. A new lookup registers only when no record exists, and the check and the insert hold the same lock. So within one sandbox session two runner calls on one connection cannot overlap, whatever the timing.
  • A helper also checks abandoned and its deadline under that lock before it registers. A helper that passes those checks just before the cap fires can still call the runner, but the call is recorded and holds the connection.
  • Tests:
    • test_a_helper_past_its_deadline_never_calls_the_runner. With e70a351's sandbox.py restored, it fails at assert not b_helper.is_alive(), because B's helper entered the runner.
    • test_each_late_runner_check_stops_the_call_alone[deadline|abandoned], added because the first test passes with either check deleted. Deleting either check fails its own case.

Docs are accurate to the code.

  • CONFIGURATION.md states what the cap stops, the late-start case, and the quarter-cap wait, and says the database is not bounded.
  • The busy-refusal text claimed "the engine serves one at a time per connection". It is now scoped to "this inbound's sandbox session", with the scope first, because a dead-letter keeps only about 200 characters.
  • "Session" now names both events that replace it: a reload or a stop.
  • Squash message: an earlier commit on the branch, 6db7214a21, says "never calls the runner", "none starts that nobody waits for" and "under _stale_lock"; no _stale_lock exists. Both repair commits carry a correction paragraph, but the engine squash keeps every message, so please edit the squash message.

Checks run at 31ee152:

  • ruff check and format: clean.
  • mypy strict on messagefoundry, linux (tray excluded) and win32: clean. mypy on tests/test_sandbox_isolated.py: clean.
  • pytest over 15 sandbox and lookup files: 521 passed, 6 skipped.
  • Pre-commit hooks: passed.

QA

QA -- korus roles/BUILDER.md step 11 (covering review)
Level: xhigh, from the brief. Tag: xhigh effort -> 10 inline angles -> dedup (no verify) -> sweep -> <=15 findings (round-6bb475e616, round-547430f655; review_tag exit 0; ascii spelling).
Rounds: 2. Findings: 20; 9 fixed, 11 open, 0 rejected.

Coverage gap: round 2's repair, 31ee152cb0 (a refusal-wording reorder and a CONFIGURATION.md sentence), was not reviewed again, because the repair limit was reached. Please cover cb3dbb2c13..31ee152cb0.

Open, proposed as rows; none weakens a control or changes the bound:

  1. An abandoned helper still encodes its full result before discarding it. The cost is bounded to one call per connection.
  2. A write failure after abandonment goes into failure, which nothing reads. This predates the range.
  3. The write-skip branch and the loop's re-wait have no test.
  4. Altitude: a per-session registry sits beside FhirLookupExecutor.abandon. An in-flight record on the DB executor would close the cross-inbound and reload gaps in one place.
  5. The late-start caveat is stated three times.
  6. The late-helper test assumes A's helper is scheduled within A's 2 s cap, which is a flake risk on a starved runner.
  7. fhirsearch _resolve_one(value: object) lost its static typing.

Legs to read on 31ee152: the Windows and Linux test legs. The race tests are timing-based, about 30 s of them.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-30. Hold answered; it enqueues once all nine required contexts are green on 849386b438f44075a41892ca6d8d7f25d069a338.

  • Coverage. The covering review (round-6bb475e616, round-547430f655) covers through cb3dbb2. The fix: one runner call per connection, under _running_lock. Its test fails with e70a351's sandbox.py.
  • The last commit. A separate review of cb3dbb2..31ee152 found it CLEAN: wording and one comment, no logic change. The refusal holds a scrubbed 80-character name and no PHI. The quarter-cap wait matches the code, and so does the per-inbound session scope.
  • Rows. Body open findings 1-7. CONFIGURATION.md:1297: 'at a reload or a stop' reads as a per-inbound stop, though stop_inbound does not close the session; this errs cautious. sandbox.py:1285: a name over about 67 characters pushes 'still running' past the 200-character dead-letter cut.
  • The squash message. Commit 6db7214's message claims _stale_lock and 'never calls the runner'. The two repair commits carry its correction. The queue squash keeps every message, and the corrections travel with it.
  • Branch and legs. The Lander updated the branch to 849386b438f44075a41892ca6d8d7f25d069a338. Its parents are (31ee152, main 3a105eb) and its remerge-diff is empty. The Windows and Linux race-test legs are read on this run.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-30. Rerun 1 of 1 for head 849386b438f44075a41892ca6d8d7f25d069a338, failed jobs of run 40997063161. On test (windows-2025, py3.14), job 123872757640, every test passed (45556 passed). Only the step-margin timing gate failed it, at 42:28 of a 55:00 cap. That is the PR-event half of the finding routed to #3515: PR 2639 made the gate advisory in merge_group only. A second red here is that finding again, not a defect in this PR.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-30. Second red on test (windows-2025, py3.14), and it is the CI finding, not this PR. On attempt 2, job 123890122874, every test passed again (45556 passed). Only the step-margin timing gate failed it, at 43:06 of 55:00. The PR-event leg still gates on that timing, and the Lander has asked the owner whether the advisory ruling extends to it. The branch was BEHIND, so the Lander updated it to ae728c5ba5c2652205ebc017c8fdd9e035dbd62b (remerge-diff 0 lines) for a fresh run on a new head.

CI failed in test (windows-2022, py3.14) / Tests (pytest) while this pull request was in the merge queue, so the queue ejected it.

Its own head can still be green: the queue revalidates the merge, and the path gates that skip on a pull request run there. Read the run before retrying.

Lander (session d1c562bf), 2026-10-30. Evicted from the queue, not merged; re-enqueued once at the same head ae728c5ba5c2652205ebc017c8fdd9e035dbd62b. The queue removed it at 07:38Z with failed_checks on merge-group commit 3016e20. The red was test (windows-2022, py3.14), job 123930609161. The Tests step hit its hard 55-minute action timeout after test_harness_scenarios::test_every_registered_scenario_passes_against_the_real_graph[hostile_oversize_field] hung past the 150 s fault timeout. That test is on the #4773 flaky list, and this PR's own windows-2022 legs passed it. This PR does change the sandbox lookup path the real graph runs, so this counts as attempt 1. A second hang of that scenario on this PR is a finding against the PR, not a flake.
