Added a section to enable the pipewire-alsa use flag since it is not enabled by default on Gentoo and can be a source of problems for desktop users.

Added a section to docs/native-streaming.md discussing the different audio backends, their associated Cargo features, and accepted values for SPOTATUI_STREAMING_AUDIO_BACKEND.

Please let me know if I should make some changes, or add additional documentation for Gentoo specifically.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added Gentoo-specific guidance for rebuilding PipeWire with ALSA support enabled.
    • Documented how Cargo features correspond to audio backend settings, including ALSA, PulseAudio, Rodio, PortAudio, JACK, SDL, GStreamer, and the built-in pipe and subprocess options.
    • Clarified the available backend choices and the environment variable used to select one.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

The native streaming guide adds Gentoo-specific PipeWire setup guidance and a reference for selecting audio backends through Cargo features and SPOTATUI_STREAMING_AUDIO_BACKEND.

Changes: Native streaming documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Native streaming guidance
docs/native-streaming.md
The PipeWire troubleshooting guidance adds the Gentoo pipewire-alsa USE flag. A new Audio Backends section maps Cargo features to SPOTATUI_STREAMING_AUDIO_BACKEND values, including ALSA, PulseAudio, Rodio, PortAudio, JACK, SDL, GStreamer, pipe, and subprocess.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: Low · up to 01351

This PR only changes documentation. The backend default statement and the Rodio entry could mislead users with custom builds or macOS users, but they cannot cause runtime failures in the application. Fix the wording before merging or accept it as a small follow-up.

pipewire-alsa fixes ALSA playback, not the visualizer this section covers. Could you move the Gentoo lines to the pipewire-alsa note in docs/native-streaming.md (line 69)? Also please write "PipeWire".

Added a note about enabling the `pipewire-alsa` use flag on Gentoo for
PipeWire since it is not enabled by default and is not a separate
package. Further, all Desktop profiles on Gentoo now include PipeWire so
this will be a common encounter for many Gentoo users.

Added a section discussing audio backends for librespot
in `docs/native-streaming.md`, documenting both the Cargo features
necessary for a specfic audio backend, as well as accepted
values for the SPOTATUI_STREAMING_AUDIO_BACKEND environment variable.

Review comments at @docs/native-streaming.md:
- Line 76: Update the audio-backend documentation to qualify ALSA as the default
for the standard non-musl Linux build, and explain that custom builds enabling
multiple backends select the first compiled backend when
SPOTATUI_STREAMING_AUDIO_BACKEND is unset. Retain the guidance that this
environment variable can select a different backend.
- Line 83: Add a macOS caveat near the rodio-backend entry noting the risk of
SIGSEGV crashes with Rodio and that the pinned fork retains older sink and
dependency ranges; recommend PortAudio for macOS users.
