feat(archive): jitter request pacing and retry throttled fetches - #16
Conversation
Archive fetched D2L as fast as responses came back: strictly sequential, but with no floor on the gap between requests and no retry at all. On a fast link a cold pass sustained ~1400 req/s, and nothing in the package handled a 429 or a 5xx. Pacing is deliberately liberal and jitter-centred. Each gap is a random duration in [N, 2N) rather than a fixed N, so consecutive requests don't land in an evenly-spaced pattern — a fixed floor only trades an unthrottled stream for a fingerprintable one. Default N is 50ms; measured gaps come out 51-102ms with every gap distinct, versus 308us minimum before. The gap is measured from the previous request's start, so a slow response already satisfies the floor and pacing adds no wall-clock to it. Retries cover HTTP 429 and 5xx only, up to 3 attempts with the existing exponential backoff plus jitter, honouring Retry-After in both delta-seconds and HTTP-date form. Transport errors are deliberately not retried: during a pass they mean the network is gone, and retrying them per-topic is exactly what the existing consecutive-transport-failure guard exists to stop. 404/400 and expired sessions stay unretryable too. --request-interval tunes the floor; 0 disables pacing entirely. Retries are independent of it, so disabling pacing still backs off on a failure. Also fixes a pre-existing leak: fetchTocFor decoded the TOC body without closing it, leaking a connection per course per pass. Retries would have multiplied that, so it is closed now. No new dependencies; retry and httpclient are already in-tree.
Reviewer's GuideThe archive fetch pipeline now uses a shared jitter-first request pacer and targeted 429/5xx retry policy, with Retry-After support and preserved transport-failure abort behavior; the change also fixes TOC response-body leaks and exposes pacing through the CLI. **Compressed responses remain open**
When D2L returns a compressed 429 or 5xx response to a TOC request, `res.Body.Close()` closes only the decompressor for gzip/deflate responses, and is a no-op for Brotli; the underlying HTTP response body stays open when it has not been fully consumed. A compressed throttling response therefore leaks its connection on each retry.
Make each decompression wrapper close its underlying response body, or explicitly close the original body in the archive fetch helpers.

**Malformed redirects look like network outages**
When five consecutive topic or file-body requests receive a malformed redirect response, `fetchTopicFor` and `downloadFileBody` wrap every `FollowRedirects` error as a `transportError`, including non-network errors such as a redirect with no `Location`. `archiveCourseV2` then counts these as network failures and aborts after five consecutive malformed responses, instead of continuing past per-topic errors.
Wrap only errors known to come from the network transport as `transportError`, leaving redirect and request-construction errors unclassified as transport failures.

**Redirect hops bypass pacing**
When a paced fetch receives a redirect to another D2L URL, `paced` calls `p.Wait()` only before the fetch helper, while `FollowRedirects` sends the next request immediately. Consecutive D2L requests therefore fall below the configured interval.
Apply the pacer before every outbound request, including each redirect hop.

<issue_to_address>
**Retry hints cause excessive delays**
When a retryable response supplies an unusually large delta-seconds `Retry-After` value, `parseRetryAfter` can overflow while converting seconds to `time.Duration`, causing `DelayFor` to ignore the hint; large values that fit are passed to `retry.WithRetry` and its uncapped `sleep(d)`, potentially blocking an update for years.
Check for overflow and cap accepted `Retry-After` durations before returning them.

+ }
+ sleep(d)
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Default attempts discard retry hints**
When a caller supplies `DelayFor` but leaves `Attempts` at its default zero value, `WithRetry` replaces the entire options struct with `DefaultOptions()` when `Attempts` is zero, discarding `DelayFor`; callers that use the default attempt count therefore retry without the supplied server hint.
Apply default attempts and base delay without replacing other caller-supplied options, including `DelayFor`.

+ }
+ }
+ sleep(d)
}
return zero, last
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Server hints suppress retry jitter**
When multiple archive clients receive the same Retry-After value that exceeds their computed backoff, `WithRetry` replaces the jittered backoff with the exact `Retry-After` hint whenever the hint is longer. Clients receiving the same common hint therefore retry in lockstep, recreating a burst against the throttled endpoint instead of retaining the jitter promised for retries.
Preserve the Retry-After duration as a minimum while adding randomized delay above it, so clients do not all retry at the same instant.

**Negative intervals disable pacing**
When the configured request interval is negative, `limiter` converts every negative interval to zero, so a caller typo such as `--request-interval=-1s` silently disables the pacing intended to protect D2L instead of reporting invalid input.
Reject negative intervals with a clear error and reserve zero as the only value that disables pacing.

<issue_to_address>
**Unpaced test can flake**
When the test machine is heavily loaded or the process is descheduled during the run, testRunWithoutPacingIsFast uses a real elapsed-time ceiling at `pacing_test.go:449`; a correct run fails if machine load or scheduler delays push the local-stub run past 1.25 seconds.
Verify that zero pacing adds no waits with an injected clock or pacer seam instead of a strict wall-clock ceiling.

<issue_to_address>
**Retry delay behavior unverified**
When `WithRetry` ignores `DelayFor` or uses a shorter hint in place of the computed backoff, testDelayForRaisesTheFloor only checks the result and call count at `retry_test.go:87-89`, so ignoring `DelayFor` passes. TestDelayForCannotShortenBackoff only checks the error and call count at `:104-105`, so replacing the backoff with the 1ns hint also passes.
Assert the actual delay using an injectable sleep function or another deterministic timing seam.

Pre-existing, and left alone here.
fetchTopicFor and downloadFileBody wrapped FollowRedirects errors as transportError before this branch (verified against main), so five malformed redirects already tripped the consecutive-transport-failure abort.
I did extend the pattern to fetchTocFor and fetchCoursesPage, where it has no practical effect — those errors are fatal to the pass regardless, so nothing is miscounted.
A correct fix is to only wrap errors that actually came from the transport (errors.As for *url.Error, which is what client.Do returns) and let redirect-construction errors through unclassified. That changes the error taxonomy with existing tests attached, so I'd rather do it as its own change. Want me to?
There was a problem hiding this comment.
Yes—please handle it as a separate follow-up. Since the topic and file FollowRedirects wrapping predates this PR, I agree it shouldn’t block this change; thanks for checking against main.
TestPacerNilAndNegativeAreSafe takes *testing.T but never uses it, since the assertion is that the nil and negative-floor guards do not panic. A panic already fails a Go test, so the calls are the whole test.

Four issues raised by CodeRabbit and cubic on #16. fetchCoursesPage never closed its response body, leaking a connection per course-list page. The leak predates this branch, but retrying 429/5xx multiplies it threefold, and paced's own contract requires fn to release any body it opens. Both non-200 and non-JSON return paths escaped it. parseRetryAfter applied the server's value with no upper bound. Archive is sequential, so "Retry-After: 86400" — or an HTTP-date days out — would hang the whole pass with no progress output. Clamped to 60s. The clamp also fixes an overflow: time.Duration(secs) * time.Second wraps negative for absurd values like 10000000000, and the helper then silently fell back to the shorter backoff. Clamping before the multiply removes that. A value too wide for int64 now clamps too, rather than failing Atoi and retrying the throttle immediately. TestRunPacesRequestsAcrossCourses used a single course, so it would have passed against a per-course pacer — the exact regression it claims to guard. It now spans two courses and asserts on the minimum observed gap across every request, so an unpaced course boundary fails it. CHANGELOG said retries happen "up to 3 times"; there are 3 attempts total.

Three issues from Sourcery. WithRetry substituted the entire Options struct with DefaultOptions() whenever Attempts was zero, silently discarding a caller-supplied DelayFor. Defaults are now applied field by field. A caller who passes only a hint and leaves Attempts alone would have lost the hint and retried on the plain backoff. When a Retry-After hint exceeded the computed backoff, the hint replaced the delay outright. Every client handed the same Retry-After would then wake at the same instant and recreate the burst the backoff existed to prevent — the exact lockstep this branch set out to avoid. The hint is now a floor and the jitter goes back on top, so retries stay spread out. A negative --request-interval was mapped to 0, meaning a typo like -1s silently disabled the pacing rather than reporting bad input. Zero remains the only way to turn pacing off; negative now falls back to the default. Tests: TestRunWithoutPacingIsFast asserted a wall-clock ceiling that could flake on a loaded machine. It now injects a pacer with a counting sleep and asserts zero sleeps directly. The two DelayFor tests only checked result and call count, so ignoring the hint entirely would have passed; they now assert elapsed time with margins large enough that only a missing sleep can fail them. A third test pins that DelayFor survives defaulting Attempts.

CodeRabbit and cubic both caught that my earlier strengthening of this test did not work. Leaving Attempts at its zero value makes WithRetry substitute the 250ms default BaseDelayMs, so the backoff alone spans 250-500ms — comfortably wide enough to clear the test's 300ms assertion with DelayFor ignored outright. Verified by mutation: with DelayFor stubbed to a no-op, the test as it stood passed four runs out of five and failed the fifth. Setting Attempts: 2 keeps BaseDelayMs at 1ms, so the only path past 300ms is the hint. The same mutation now fails in ~2ms, deterministically. Also gives a negative --request-interval actual feedback, which the commit message claimed but the code did not deliver: the CLI now rejects it, and the library fallback to DefaultRequestInterval stays for non-CLI callers.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winClose the underlying body at the decompression boundary.
Options.pacedretries 429 and 5xx responses up to three times. The TOC, topic, and course-page helpers return on these statuses without reading the response body.httpclient.Fetchreplaces each compressed response body with a decompression wrapper, but closing that wrapper does not close the underlying transport body. Each retry can therefore retain a transport resource. Wrap the decoder so itsClosemethod also closes the original body.Suggested fix

Learning: In the Go helper parseRetryAfter in internal/archive/pacing.go, compare numeric seconds against the maximum wait before multiplying by time.Second to avoid time.Duration overflow. Digit-only values that exceed the integer parsing range must also return maxRetryAfter rather than discard the server's retry hint.
CodeRabbit flagged the explanatory comment in the test setup. AGENTS.md rule 6 makes no-comments project policy rather than personal preference, and this was an inline explanatory comment rather than a doc comment. Attempts: 2 stays; verified by mutation that the test still fails when DelayFor is stubbed to a no-op.

Why
archive updatefetched D2L as fast as responses came back. The pass is strictly sequential, but there was no floor on the gap between requests and no retry at all. Measured against a stub on a 60-topic cold pass:Nothing in the package handled a 429 or a 5xx either. The incremental gate already keeps steady-state passes cheap (a warm pass costs 1 roster call + 1 TOC per course and zero content traffic), so the exposure is a cold archive or a bulk re-sync.
What
Jitter-first pacing. Each gap is a random duration in
[N, 2N)rather than a fixedN. This is the point of the change: a fixed floor only trades an unthrottled stream for an evenly-spaced one, which is no harder to fingerprint. DefaultNis 50ms.Every gap differs — there is no lockstep pattern to detect. That's a ~106x rate reduction (1400 → 13.2 req/s) while staying liberal.
The floor is measured from the previous request's start, so a response that already took 200ms satisfies the floor on its own and the pacer sleeps zero. Pacing adds no wall-clock to slow responses.
Retries for 429 and 5xx only — 3 attempts, exponential backoff with jitter, honoring
Retry-Afterin both delta-seconds and HTTP-date form.--request-intervaltunes the floor;0disables pacing entirely. Retries are independent of it, so disabling pacing still backs off on a failure.Design call: transport errors are not retried
I first wired transport errors into the retry path. That broke
TestRunAbortsAfterConsecutiveTransportFailures(15 attempts against the existing bound of 5), and the test was right — retrying per-topic on a dead network is precisely whatmaxConsecutiveTransportFailuresexists to prevent.So
retryableErrorreturns false for transport errors and leaves them to the existing guard. That is not a regression: they were never retried before either. The result is that retries apply exactly where the server is reachable and asking us to back off, and the abort-on-dead-network path is untouched.404/400 and expired sessions also stay unretryable — a deleted topic isn't flaky.
Also fixed
fetchTocFordecoded the TOC body without ever closing it, leaking a connection per course per pass. Pre-existing, but retries would have multiplied it.No new dependencies
internal/retryandinternal/httpclientwere already in-tree.internal/retrygains a backwards-compatibleDelayForhook that can only raise the computed backoff, never lower it, so a caller cannot accidentally retry sooner than the exponential schedule already allows.Verification

internal/archive/pacing_test.go(pacer arithmetic against an injected fake clock, jitter spread,Retry-Afterparsing, retry classification, and end-to-end throttle/recovery against a stub D2L) plus 2 forDelayFor.Summary by Sourcery
Throttle archive request traffic and improve recovery from transient D2L failures while preserving fast handling of permanent and transport errors.
