Four fixes found while debugging a live archive that had silently stopped converging, plus a credential leak found along the way. Each concern is its own commit.

1. archive update aborted the whole pass on one bad topic

D2L keeps stale TOC entries flagged IsBroken (still listed, 404 on the topics API) — e.g. a dead 2022 dropbox link in Marketing. archiveCourseV2 returned on the first fetchTopicFor error, so that single topic blocked every course queued after it; the pass never completed and the per-course index was rolled back.

  • Topics flagged broken are skipped without an API call.
  • A failed metadata fetch is counted and the pass continues; the topic stays unrecorded so the next pass retries it.
  • Only 401/403 stops the run, now reported as session expired; run 'schooltools login'.
  • Summary/--json gain topicsFailed / topicsSkipped; --dry-run reports broken topics.

Live verification: the fixed binary scanned all 6 courses and exited 0 (394 checked, 9 fetched, 383 unchanged, 2 skipped (broken)), where the old binary aborted at course 3 every time.

2. D2L file-body URLs with unescaped characters

url.Parse failed on Acetic Acid, 5% (Vinegar).pdf (invalid URL escape "% ("), and a raw # in filenames (Quiz #3 …) was reinterpreted as a URL fragment, truncating the path to a 404. New internal/urlutil re-encodes the path portion (preserving valid %XX sequences and query strings); both archive update's body download and download route through it.

Live verification: Acetic Acid, 5% (Vinegar).pdf (263 KB) is now archived.

3. Status/search trusted index pointers instead of the filesystem

LoadStatus counted a body present whenever currentBody != "" without stat-ing the blob, and find --with-bodies / --missing-bodies had the same blind spot — a store with 186 dangling pointers reported "8 missing" while --dry-run said 201. LoadStatus now stats each blob; search gained WithBodiesOnDisk (used by find --with-bodies) and --missing-bodies matches pointer-set-but-blob-missing. Export keeps the old semantics so its skip reporting is unchanged.

Live verification: status went from "330 present, 8 missing" to the honest "337 present, 10 missing"; find --missing-bodies went 8 → 16.

4. Login dumped credentials to stderr unconditionally

fetchPost printed request headers and raw Set-Cookie values on every form POST regardless of verbosity, and every auto-refresh path hard-codes Verbose: false — so any archive update / login against an expired session leaked the ADFS SAMLRequest URL and d2lSessionVal / d2lSecureSessionVal values (into journald under the systemd unit), violating SECURITY.md's threat model. fetchPost now takes Options and dumps only behind --verbose; SAML parameters are length-redacted even in verbose mode; cookie values are truncated like the existing per-hop dump.

5. systemd housekeeping

splitTimerFields required two day-of-week tokens, so never-fired timers printed no next-run and a placeholder PASSED made Unit/Activates swap. Also removed dead removed bookkeeping in Uninstall, routed install warnings through Status.Warnings (visible to --json), and flagged unit files with no ExecStart= line.

Testing

go build, go vet ./..., go test -race ./... all clean. New tests: urlutil escaping table + resolve round-trips, archive resilience (broken/404 topics don't abort, 401 does, diff skips broken), body-state on-disk semantics, login dump gating + SAML redaction (stderr captured), systemd field-splitting incl. rows copied from real list-timers output + legacyExecStart. No new dependencies.

Not fixed here (data conditions, not code)

~10 File bodies in the live store 404 because the teacher deleted the files from D2L's enforced-content folder, and a handful of topics removed from their courses keep dangling pointers — no code change can recover content the server no longer serves. archive verify continues to report them honestly.

Summary by Sourcery

Make archive updates resilient and truthful while hardening URL handling, session diagnostics, credential logging, and systemd maintenance.

New Features:

  • Add archive update reporting for skipped broken topics and failed topic fetches, including dry-run and JSON counters.
  • Add on-disk body filtering for archive search results and missing-body detection.

Bug Fixes:

  • Keep archive passes progressing past broken or individually failing topics while stopping clearly on expired sessions and sustained transport failures.
  • Preserve completed archive index updates on fatal pass errors and retry modified topics whose body download fails.
  • Correct file-body URL handling for unescaped path characters and prevent login pages from being archived as content.
  • Make archive status, search, file-topic listings, and verification reflect actual blob availability and unreadable blobs.
  • Prevent login and session-refresh diagnostics from leaking cookies or SAML credentials.
  • Fix systemd timer parsing, uninstall error reporting, installation warnings, and legacy unit detection.

Enhancements:

  • Improve session-expiration reporting across course, topic, and body requests with actionable login guidance.

Deployment:

  • Improve systemd timer and unit-management behavior, including accurate timer status and safer uninstall handling.

Documentation:

  • Document archive resilience, body-state semantics, URL handling, credential-redaction behavior, and systemd fixes in the changelog.

Tests:

  • Add coverage for archive resilience, body presence semantics, URL escaping, credential-redacted logging, and systemd timer parsing.

D2L stores some /content/enforced/ URLs with characters that are not
legal in a URI path: literal spaces, a bare '%' that is not the start of
an escape ("5% (Vinegar).pdf"), and '#' in filenames ("Quiz #3 …").
These reached downloadFileBody (archive update) and resolveFileURL
(download) verbatim, where url.Parse either failed outright
("invalid URL escape") or silently reinterpreted everything after '#'
as a URL fragment, so the request hit a truncated path and 404'd.

The new internal/urlutil package re-encodes the path portion of a
reference (preserving already-valid %XX sequences, keeping query
strings intact) before it is resolved against the LMS base URL. Both
download paths now route through it.
A single un-fetchable topic aborted the entire archive pass:
archiveCourseV2 returned on the first fetchTopicFor error, which meant
D2L's stale "broken" TOC entries (still listed, flagged isBroken, 404 on
the topics API) permanently blocked every course queued after them —
on the live store that was one dead 2022 dropbox link in Marketing
stopping all six courses from converging.

archiveCourseV2 now:
  - skips TOC topics D2L flags with IsBroken without an API call,
  - counts a failed metadata fetch and continues with the next topic
    (the topic is left unrecorded, so the next pass retries it),
  - still aborts the whole run on 401/403, reported as a clear
    "session expired; run 'schooltools login'" error instead of a raw
    status line.

The update summary and --json envelope gain topicsFailed / topicsSkipped
counters; --dry-run counts broken topics so the plan matches what a real
pass will do.
Status and search trusted the index's currentBody pointer instead of
the filesystem. On the live store that surfaced as "Bodies: 326
present, 8 missing" while 186 referenced blobs were actually gone from
disk — the old prune bug's damage was invisible until archive update
--dry-run reported 201 bodies to fill.

LoadStatus now stats each blob, Search gains a WithBodiesOnDisk filter
(used by find --with-bodies) and --missing-bodies now also matches
topics whose pointer exists but whose blob does not. HasBody on
SearchHit and FileTopic reflects on-disk state. Export keeps the old
pointer semantics so its "skipped-missing-body" reporting is unchanged.
…ookies

fetchPost unconditionally printed request headers and raw Set-Cookie
values for every form POST, even with Verbose:false — and every
auto-refresh path (cmd/whoami.go loginFn) hard-codes Verbose:false. A
single `archive update` against an expired session therefore leaked the
ADFS SAMLRequest URL and the d2lSessionVal/d2lSecureSessionVal cookie
values to stderr, violating the SECURITY.md threat model.

fetchPost now takes Options and only dumps when verbose, matching
fetchGet. Additionally, even in verbose mode SAML parameters
(SAMLRequest/SAMLResponse/RelayState) are replaced with a length marker
and cookie values are truncated, mirroring the existing per-hop dump.
…umns

splitTimerFields required two day-of-week tokens, so any row whose LAST
column was a placeholder (a timer that has never fired) was dropped
entirely and status printed no "Next run" at all. When only PASSED was
a placeholder, the tail anchoring consumed the "-" as the unit name,
reporting Unit="-" and ACTIVATES=<timer name>.

The parse now anchors on the final UNIT/ACTIVATES tokens and treats
placeholder columns explicitly; the CLI omits the "(…)" suffix when no
relative time is available.
Uninstall built a `removed` slice it never read and had two identical
return branches. Install printed renderExecStart's volatile-path warning
straight to stderr instead of routing it through Status.Warnings, so
--json output could not see it; it now goes through the same warning
channel as the legacy-ExecStart warning. legacyExecStart also treats a
unit file with no ExecStart line at all as needing an upgrade.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update archive topic resilience, body-on-disk reporting and verification, D2L URL resolution, systemd timer and unit reporting, and login diagnostics.

Changes: Archive handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Topic update resilience
cmd/archive.go, internal/archive/archive.go, internal/archive/archive_test.go, internal/archive/resilience_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
Archive runs skip broken topics and count other topic-fetch failures. Session-expired responses stop the run. Consecutive transport failures can also stop a course pass. Fatal paths save the updated course index. Results and command output report topic counts.
Body availability and verification
cmd/archive.go, internal/archive/store.go, internal/archive/archive.go, internal/archive/verify.go, internal/archive/body_state_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
Search, status, and file-topic results check whether body blobs exist on disk. Verify reports unreadable blobs separately from missing blobs.

Content URL resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
URL path resolution and downloads
internal/urlutil/*, internal/archive/archive.go, cmd/download.go, internal/archive/url_escape_test.go, cmd/download_test.go, internal/urlutil/urlutil_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
The shared URL utility cleans path characters and resolves references against a base URL. Archive body downloads and the download command use it. Tests cover special characters and absolute and relative URLs.

Systemd reporting and timer parsing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unit status and timer reporting
internal/systemd/systemd.go, internal/systemd/systemd_test.go, cmd/systemd.go, CHANGELOG.md
Missing ExecStart= directives are treated as legacy. Install returns warnings through status, and uninstall reports removal errors. Timer parsing handles placeholders and multi-token fields. Command output omits an empty last-run duration.

Login diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Gated and redacted diagnostic output
internal/login/login.go, internal/login/login_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
Login request and cookie diagnostics require verbose mode. SAML query values and cookie values are redacted in logs.

**SAML credentials reach logs**

When verbose login logs or sends a SAML-bearing URL as a Referer, `dumpReqHeaders` redacts the request URL but prints Referer values verbatim, and other verbose paths print raw redirect, response, and request URLs or Location headers. SAML parameter values therefore reach stderr and captured logs.

Redact SAML parameters in every verbose URL and header diagnostic, including Referer and Location.

**Short cookie secrets reach logs**

When verbose logging prints a credential cookie value of 20 bytes or fewer, `truncateForLog` leaves those values unchanged, so `dumpRespSetCookies` prints the complete credential to stderr and captured logs.

Redact cookie values rather than relying on truncation to protect them.

**Expired downloads continue archive**

When a file-body request returns HTTP 401 or 403, `downloadFileBody` returns an ordinary error or `archiveCourseV2` counts the body error and continues. The archive can finish with missing bodies instead of reporting the expired session.

Return `errSessionExpired` for 401/403 file-body responses and propagate it from the body-error branch in `archiveCourseV2`.

**Expired course listing gets wrong error**

When an archive run without explicit course IDs receives HTTP 401 or 403 from the my-courses API, `fetchCoursesPage` returns a generic status error, so `Run` reports a course-list failure instead of the session-expired message.

Have `fetchCoursesPage` return `errSessionExpired` for HTTP 401 and 403.

When an expired API request redirects to a login page that responds with HTTP 200, `FollowRedirects` follows only one redirect, so an expired-session redirect that ends at a 200 login page reaches `fetchTopicFor` as a successful response. Its JSON-formatting fallback returns non-JSON bytes unchanged, and the archive records the login HTML as fetched topic metadata instead of retrying the topic.

Detect login/HTML responses as authentication failures before the raw-body fallback, and return the session-expired error.

+	}
+	b, err := url.Parse(base)
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Absolute file URLs remain malformed**

When D2L supplies an absolute file URL with a space, bare percent, or `#` in its path, `ResolveD2L` returns absolute URLs unchanged, and `resolveFileURL` can bypass the helper. The raw path reaches the HTTP client malformed or truncated, so the download fails or targets the wrong resource.

Apply path escaping to absolute URLs too, and ensure `resolveFileURL` routes them through that handling.

Also at `cmd/download.go:320-322`.

+		next = strings.Join(rest[:4], " ")
+		if rest[4] != timerPlaceholder {
+			left = rest[4]
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Timer status loses last run**

When `systemctl list-timers` reports NEXT as `-` and a real LAST datetime, `splitTimerFields` treats the sole weekday token as identifying a real NEXT datetime, so it builds a bogus next-run value from placeholder and LAST fields and loses the actual last run.

Distinguish a placeholder NEXT from a real NEXT before assigning the remaining fields, and parse LAST when NEXT is `-`.

+}
+
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Question marks truncate filenames**

When a D2L filename contains a literal `?`, `CleanPath` treats the first `?` as the query delimiter, so the filename remainder is sent as query data and the request targets the wrong path.

Encode literal question marks in the path without treating them as the start of a query.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Fetch failures can still stop iteration**

When a metadata fetch fails while later topics remain queued, `archiveCourseV2` can increment `TopicsFailed` and then stop processing the course, yet `TestRunSurvivesBrokenAndFailingTopics` still passes: line `at` makes the 404 topic the last topic, and the only healthy topic was processed before it. The counter and index assertions therefore do not prove that processing continues after a failure.

Add a healthy topic after the failing topic and assert that it is archived.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Empty file-topic results pass**

When `FileTopics` returns an empty slice, `FileTopics` can return no topics and `TestFileTopicsHasBodyChecksDisk` still passes: the loop at line `ec` executes zero times, so neither expected `HasBody` value is checked.

Assert the returned topic count or expected topic IDs before checking their `HasBody` values.

+	}}}}
</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Broken topics can still be fetched**

When the implementation calls the topics API for a topic marked broken but still counts it as skipped, `archiveCourseV2` can fetch topic 6002 and then count it as skipped, yet `TestRunSurvivesBrokenAndFailingTopics` passes because it checks `TopicsSkipped` but never checks `f.topicCalls[6002]`. The fake records that call, so the test does not verify the promised no-API-call behavior.

Assert that `f.topicCalls[6002]` remains zero after the run.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**Nonverbose POST can be skipped**

When `fetchPost` returns early for a nonverbose call without sending the POST, `fetchPost` can return without making the request when `Verbose` is false, yet `TestFetchPostDumpsOnlyWhenVerbose` passes because line `br` discards the response and error and only checks that stderr is empty. The verbose call does not verify that the nonverbose call reached the server.

Assert the nonverbose call succeeds and have the test server verify that it received the POST.
</issue_to_address>

Sourcery assessment

Needs a human reviewer. 12 findings to address first, and if the URL repair resolves a file reference to the wrong resource, the downloaded bytes can be saved as that topic’s body and remain in the archive after reverting; the affected body can be cleared and fetched again. The login changes reduce credential exposure, but the main persistent risk in this diff is incorrect archived body data.

570-588: Redact all SAML values consistently, including repeated parameters and POST-body risk.

q.Get(k) reads only the first value of a key. q.Set then replaces every value of that key. This is safe. The query key match is case-sensitive, so a samlrequest key is not redacted. Servers usually treat SAML parameter names as case-sensitive, so the risk is low. The function is otherwise correct.

ResolveD2L returned absolute URLs unchanged, so a D2L URL with a space,
bare % or # in its path still reached the HTTP client malformed;
resolveFileURL (download) also short-circuited before the helper.
Absolute URLs now go through the same path encoding, and both call
sites route everything through ResolveD2L.

A literal '?' in a filename was being treated as the start of a query
string, truncating the requested path. D2L file URLs never carry a
query, so '?' is now encoded as a path character (%3F).
…nd 401 bodies

Three paths still mistook an expired session for ordinary data:

- the my-courses listing 401'd and surfaced as a course-list failure
  instead of "session expired";
- a topic request that redirected to the D2L login page returned HTTP
  200 with text/html; the pretty-JSON fallback stored the login HTML as
  the topic's metadata blob;
- a 401/403 on a file-body download was counted as a body error, so the
  run completed with missing bodies and exit 0 while the session was
  dead.

fetchCoursesPage, fetchTopicFor and downloadFileBody now map 401/403
(and login-page responses) to errSessionExpired; the body-error branch
propagates it as a fatal run error.

Also strengthens TestRunSurvivesBrokenAndFailingTopics: a healthy topic
is now queued after the failing one (proving the pass continues), and
the test asserts the broken topic is never requested.
The loop over FileTopics ran zero times when the global index was
missing, so the test passed vacuously. The test now seeds the global
index and asserts the returned topic count.
…lues

The first pass redacted only the request URL. Verbose mode still
printed the Referer header — which during the ADFS flow is the previous
hop's URL carrying a SAMLRequest — plus Location headers, redirect
targets, POST form actions and GET-failure URLs. All verbose URL prints
now go through redactSAML.

Cookie values were only truncated at 20 bytes, so short credentials
printed in full. dumpRespSetCookies and the per-hop dump now redact the
value entirely (keeping the name and attributes, which is what the
Expires/Max-Age debugging actually needs).
With a single day-of-week token the parser assumed it began a real NEXT
datetime, so a NEXT="-" row (timer with no next elapse but a past run)
produced a bogus next-run built from placeholders and lost the real
LAST. Query also skipped such rows before parsing because it filtered
on the first field being a weekday; it now filters on the line carrying
the timer unit name, which distinguishes data rows from the header and
summary lines directly.

All 12 findings addressed in follow-up commits. Mapping:

1. SAML in Referer/Location/redirect URLs — every verbose URL print now goes through redactSAML: request URL, Referer header, Location header, redirect targets (-> nextURL), POST form actions, ADFS stage redirect, and GET-failure URLs (fix(login): redact SAML in every verbose URL/header, redact cookie values). New test TestDumpReqHeadersRedactsReferer.

2. Short cookie values printed in full — values are now redacted entirely (<redacted N bytes>) in both dumpRespSetCookies and the per-hop dump, keeping name + attributes, which is what the Expires/Max-Age debugging needs. truncateForLog is no longer used for cookies. Test TestDumpRespSetCookiesRedactsValue.

3. 401/403 body downloads treated as ordinary errors — downloadFileBody now returns errSessionExpired and archiveCourseV2's body-error branch propagates it as fatal. Test TestRunAbortsOnExpiredBodyDownload.

4. Course-list 401 wrong error — fetchCoursesPage maps 401/403 to errSessionExpired. Test TestRunAbortsOnExpiredCourseList.

5. Login page archived as metadata — fetchTopicFor now rejects text/html responses and login URLs before the pretty-JSON fallback, returning errSessionExpired; test asserts the login HTML is not written to the index (TestRunAbortsOnLoginPageTopicResponse).

6. Absolute URLs bypass cleaning — ResolveD2L now cleans absolute URLs too, and resolveFileURL in download.go routes everything through the helper. Test TestResolveD2LAbsoluteURLIsCleaned.

7. Timer status loses last run when NEXT is - — the parser now handles a single day-of-week token at a non-zero offset (placeholder NEXT + real LAST), and Query filters data rows by the timer unit name rather than a weekday-first heuristic. Test TestSplitTimerFieldsPlaceholderNextRealLast.

8. ? truncates filenames — CleanPath no longer splits at ?; it is encoded as a path character (%3F), which is correct for D2L file URLs (they never carry query strings).

9. Fetch-failure test didn't prove continuation — a healthy topic (6004) is now queued after the 404 topic, and the test asserts it's archived (TopicsFetched == 2).

10. FileTopics test passed vacuously — the test now seeds the global index and asserts len(topics) == 2 before checking HasBody (it was failing for the missing-index reason the moment the count was asserted — good catch).

11. Broken topics could be fetched — the test now asserts f.topicCalls[6002] == 0.

12. Non-verbose POST not verified to reach the server — the test server counts requests, asserts the non-verbose call returned 200 and arrived, and that both calls were sent.

On the persistent-data concern: with the URL fix, requests reach the server at the correctly-encoded path (asserted in TestRunDownloadsFileBodyWithUnescapedURL/WithHashInURL via the path the fake server observes), so no wrong bytes can be stored; the only bodies that fail now are files D2L itself 404s (deleted content), which store nothing.

…solve errors

  per-topic HTTP failure. A network outage no longer sends one doomed
  request per topic and exits 0: the pass aborts after 5 consecutive
  transport failures, in both the metadata and body loops. Per-topic
  HTTP failures (404 on a deleted topic) keep the existing continue
  behavior and do not consume the budget.
- downloadFileBody now rejects a final login URL before reading the
  bytes: an expired session redirects the download to the D2L login
  page, which answers 200 with HTML that would otherwise be hashed and
  stored as the topic's body. Content-Type is deliberately not checked
  — D2L serves real .html topic files as text/html.
- The resolve error message kept the resolved URL, not the input:
  "resolve https://…" was printed with the encoded value instead of
  what D2L actually supplied.
- fetchTopicFor now closes the response body on its early returns;
  repeated 404s otherwise retain connections for the whole pass.
- fakeD2L guards topicCalls with a mutex (the handler goroutine wrote
  it while the test read it) and gains a hijack knob so the transport
  path is exercised for real, plus tests: consecutive-transport abort,
  HTTP failures not consuming the budget, and a 403 TOC for both Run
  and Diff.
fileExists returned false for any os.Stat error, so a permission or
I/O error reported a present body as missing — LoadStatus, FileTopics
and bodyNeeded all read that as "fetch it again". Only positive
non-existence now counts as missing.

LoadStatus.BodiesPresent also counted non-File topics that still hold a
body while FileTopics/MissingBodies only cover file-compatible topics,
so the two halves of the status line disagreed. The on-disk check is
now restricted to the same topic set.
Uninstall discarded both os.Remove errors, so a permission error left
the unit files on disk while the caller was told everything was
removed. Only os.ErrNotExist is ignored now; anything else is joined
and returned. Uninstall is also a no-op again when nothing was
installed — it no longer runs daemon-reload just to surface that
command's error.

splitTimerFields took LEFT as a single token, but systemctl prints it
as display text ("29min left", "1h 42min left"): the word "left" was
dropped and, with a multi-token LEFT, the parse could mis-align. LEFT
is now the token range up to the next known column, joined with
spaces. Placeholders are "-" everywhere but "n/a" on systemd 249+, so
both are recognized, and an all-placeholder NEXT normalizes to empty
so status renders no "Next run: n/a (in )" line.
captureStderr restored os.Stderr with a plain statement, so a panic
inside fn left stderr redirected for the rest of the test binary, and
it read the pipe only after fn returned, so a write larger than the
pipe buffer deadlocked. The writer now closes and stderr restores in
a deferred func, and the reader drains concurrently.

The httptest handler incremented a plain int the test goroutine read
back, which -race flags. The counter is an atomic.Int32 now.
…en column

A --dry-run whose only leftovers are topics D2L flags broken printed
"Nothing to do — your archive is up to date", which is not true: those
topics will never be archived. It now prints a distinct no-fetchable-work
line naming the broken topics.

The dry-run per-course table counted broken topics in Total without a
Broken column, so the row columns did not add up; the column is there
now.

Also adds a table test for resolveFileURL, the download route's URL
handling (spaces, %, #, an existing escape, a relative reference with
a colon, an absolute URL, and the empty string), matching the
CHANGELOG claim that both routes were fixed.

Second review round addressed (CodeRabbit + cubic, 20 findings). Every thread has a reply with its disposition and is resolved.

Fixed in this round (d2e378e, a3adc67, 86d33a6, 2859c6d, fd9217e):

  • Transport failures are classified (errTransport) and bounded — the pass aborts after 5 consecutive ones instead of sending one doomed request per topic and exiting 0; per-topic HTTP failures (404 on a deleted topic) keep the continue behavior and don't consume the budget. Both loops, covered by two tests using real hijacked connections.
  • A redirected body download that ends at the login page no longer gets hashed as the topic body (ua.IsLoginURL guard; Content-Type deliberately unchecked — real .html topic files exist).
  • downloadFileBody resolve errors print the URL D2L supplied, not the re-encoded one.
  • fetchTopicFor closes the response body on early returns (repeated 404s were pinning connections).
  • fileExists treats only fs.ErrNotExist as missing; a permission/I/O error can no longer report a present blob as gone. LoadStatus.BodiesPresent is restricted to the same file-compatible topic set FileTopics/MissingBodies cover, so the status halves agree.
  • Uninstall reports removal errors instead of ignoring them, and is a no-op again when nothing was installed (it no longer runs daemon-reload just to surface that command's error).
  • The timer parser keeps the full multi-token LEFT field (29min left, 1h 42min left), recognizes n/a as well as - (systemd 249+), and normalizes an all-placeholder NEXT so status prints no Next run: n/a (in ) line.
  • captureStderr restores os.Stderr under defer (panic-safe) and drains the pipe concurrently; the httptest request counter is an atomic.Int32; fakeD2L.topicCalls is mutex-guarded (handler goroutine vs. test goroutine).
  • The dry run prints a distinct "nothing to fetch — every remaining topic is flagged broken" message instead of "your archive is up to date", and its per-course table gained a Broken column so rows add up.
  • ResolveD2L prefixes relative references with ./, so a colon in the first segment (Week 1: Intro/notes.pdf) can't fail url.Parse; the doc comment no longer over-claims.
  • CHANGELOG: scoped the resilience claim (course-level errors still stop the run), pointed the dangling-pointer cross-reference at the Unreleased prune entry, and fixed the heading spacing markdownlint flagged.
  • New coverage: TOC 403 for Run and Diff, and a resolveFileURL table test (spaces, %, #, existing escape, colon-in-segment, absolute, empty).

Not actioned (with reasons):

  • redactSAML case-sensitivity: ADFS/D2L treat SAML parameter names as case-sensitive and the codebase only ever matches the canonical spellings, so a lowercase samlrequest would already have failed the flow. Accepted as low risk, noted here rather than changed.
  • The ast-grep hard-coded-credential warning in login_test.go is a false positive (synthetic fixture used to assert the value is not logged).

Already fixed in the previous round (threads verified against the current tree, not re-changed): Referer/Location/redirect SAML redaction, full cookie-value redaction, body/course-list 401 mapping, login-page metadata rejection, absolute-URL cleaning, ?-encoding, placeholder-NEXT parsing, the four test-strengthening findings.

Live verification with the final binary: archive update --dry-run and a full archive update both run clean — 6/6 courses, 394 topics, exit 0, fully converged (only the 2 broken + 4 server-side-deleted file bodies outstanding).

A fatal return from the topic/body loops skipped SaveCourseIndex, so
every topic fetched earlier in that pass was written as a blob and then
forgotten: unreferenced blobs in an append-only store, and index updates
dropped on the floor. Both abort paths (session expired, consecutive
transport failures) now persist the accumulated index first, joining any
save error into the abort.

TestRunAbortsAfterConsecutiveTransportFailures now fetches two topics
cleanly before the outage and asserts both survive in the index while
the unreachable ones stay absent.
Making fileExists tolerant of non-not-exist stat errors was right for
the status/search/refetch paths (a permission error must not read as
"missing body"), but it also applied to archive verify, which would
have passed blobs it could not actually stat.

verify now uses statOK, which surfaces the stat error: a blob that is
present but unreadable is reported as unreadable-*-blob rather than
missing-*-blob, and verify no longer reports OK for it. Adds a test
that reproduces a non-not-exist stat failure deterministically (the
blobs path is a regular file, so stat returns ENOTDIR).
When both a unit-file removal and daemon-reload failed, the reload
branch returned first and the caller never learned a unit file was
still on disk. The removal error is now joined into the reload error
(errors.Join ignores the nil case, so a reload-only failure reads
exactly as before).
…lute URLs

isAbs matched only the lowercase "http://" / "https://" prefixes, so
"HTTPS://files.example.com/a.pdf" fell through to the relative path
and got a "./" prefix — the download would then have targeted the D2L
base instead of the file host. Schemes are case-insensitive per RFC
3986; isAbs lowercases before matching.
The updated fixtures had drifted to using only "n/a", leaving the
pre-249 "-" form untested on a passing parse. A table test now runs
the never-fired and placeholder-NEXT shapes against both spellings.
The reader goroutine sends on an unbuffered channel; if fn panics,
nobody receives, so the goroutine leaks with the captured bytes still
in flight. A one-slot buffer lets it finish after the deferred cleanup.

Wrap only real transport errors as transportError.

httpclient.FollowRedirects can also return non-transport errors, for example a redirect without a Location header. Line 1038 wraps every error as transportError. These errors then count toward maxConsecutiveTransportFailures and can trigger a false "network unreachable" abort. The same issue applies at line 1127. This was already flagged in a previous review and is still present.

Restrict the HTML-based session-expiry abort to login URLs.

The condition strings.Contains(ct, "text/html") || ua.IsLoginURL(...) returns errSessionExpired for any HTTP 200 topic response with an HTML content type. A gateway or proxy error page then aborts the whole run with "run 'schooltools login'". This was already flagged in a previous review. The code still has the same behavior.

Use only ua.IsLoginURL(res.Request.URL.String()). Alternatively, abort on HTML only when the final URL is a login URL.

… fails

Follow-up to the abort-persistence fix, and a hole that predates it: when
a topic is queued as "modified" and its body download then fails, the
index recorded the new LastModified (and new metadata blob) while
keeping the old currentBody. The next pass then saw matching metadata
plus an existing blob and skipped the changed body forever — silent
staleness with nothing in the counters to show for it.

The pointer is now cleared whenever the body isn't saved for a modified
topic (download failure and blob-save failure alike). The blob is never
removed and BodyVersions still names it, so nothing is lost; the topic
simply stays eligible for a body retry, which the next pass performs as
body-missing convergence work.

TestModifiedTopicWithFailedBodyStaysEligible seeds six modified File
topics whose bodies 404, asserts every pointer is cleared while the new
metadata timestamp sticks, and then asserts a recovery pass re-fetches
all six bodies. It fails without this change.

Third review round (6 cubic findings) — all fixed, all threads resolved:

  • archive verify no longer passes blobs it could not stat (cd7cbbc). The tolerant fileExists from the previous round stays for the status/search/bodyNeeded/export paths — a permission error there must not read as "missing body" — but verify now uses a new statOK and reports a present-but-unstattable blob as unreadable-*-blob instead of missing-*-blob, and no longer reports ok for it. The test reproduces a non-not-exist stat failure deterministically (the blobs path is a regular file → ENOTDIR), so it doesn't depend on uid or chmod.
  • Aborting a course pass no longer discards the index (0dda22c): blobs fetched earlier in that pass keep a reference instead of becoming orphans.
  • Uninstall joins the removal error into the daemon-reload failure (56c3a3e) instead of hiding it behind the reload branch.
  • Case-insensitive scheme detection in ResolveD2L (70bc9c9): HTTPS://… is absolute, not a relative path under the D2L base.
  • Both placeholder spellings (- and n/a) are covered again in both row shapes (ca4cf0b), and captureStderr's channel is buffered so the reader goroutine can't leak (2613bba).

One finding was about my own previous-round fix and is worth calling out (ebbf46a): persisting the index on abort exposed a latent staleness hole — when a topic was queued as modified and its body download then failed, the index recorded the new LastModified while keeping the old currentBody, so the next pass saw "matching metadata + existing blob" and skipped the changed body forever, with nothing in the counters to show for it. (The same hole existed on the non-fatal 404 path before that.) A modified topic whose body isn't saved now clears its pointer: the blob is never removed and BodyVersions still names it, but the topic stays eligible for a retry. TestModifiedTopicWithFailedBodyStaysEligible asserts the cleared pointers, the preserved metadata timestamp, and that a recovery pass re-fetches all six bodies — it fails without the change.

Verification: go build, go vet, go test -race ./... clean; CI green (build ×2, test ×2, lint; Sourcery and cubic pass — CodeRabbit's last full review was clean and it is now rate-limited). Live store re-checked after the changes: archive update scans 6/6 courses and exits 0, status reads 338 present / 10 missing, and archive verify's issue mix is unchanged (no unreadable-* false positives).
