Summary

A field whose ghost is sized from its own width sample lost the Ghost Text Size multiplier. GhostFontResolver.resolve applies the multiplier, but applyingTypefaceEvidence replaces that resolution with the system face scaled to the field's adopted sample (scaledSystemFace), or with the face a typeface verdict settled on (settledResolution). Both were built at the host's size. At a 60% multiplier, Claude's composer showed its ghost at 15.7pt instead of 9.4pt. HostFaceMemory then saved 15.7pt for that style, so the next field and the next launch also started at full size.

Both paths now apply the multiplier last, the same way the resolver and applyingMatchedTypeface already do. The host's own size is still used for judging families against the host's widths and for snapping to the zoom ladder.

Validation

  • xcodebuild test on upstream main (8cdbea2) with this commit, -only-testing:CotabbyTests/OverlayControllerTypefaceTests -only-testing:CotabbyTests/HostFaceMemoryTests: ** TEST SUCCEEDED **, 24 tests, 0 failures.
  • The new testAScaledSystemFaceKeepsTheUsersSizeMultiplier covers three cases: the scaled-sample path, the zoom-ladder snap and the undecidable verdict, each at a 0.6 multiplier.
  • Not verified on screen yet. The cause was found from the saved HostFaceMemory on a Mac at a 60% multiplier: sizes saved for host-reported styles were 1.6–2.1 times the reported size times 0.6, while the other paths had saved exactly that product.

Risk / rollout notes

  • A multiplier of 1 (the default) is unaffected; userScaled returns the resolution unchanged.
  • HostFaceMemory entries saved by earlier builds under a non-default multiplier may hold an unscaled size. A field's first presentations can use that size until the field settles and records the corrected size over it. There's no migration.
  • settledResolution is no longer private, so the test can reach it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Ghost text now consistently respects the user’s size multiplier when matching system fonts, including when font size is inferred from width or adjusted to a zoom level.
    • Font sizing remains consistent when a host-reported size is unavailable or when the system font size must be resolved from a width sample.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

The PR appears safe to merge; the revised test addresses the previous finding.

Summary

Ghost text keeps the user’s size multiplier when its font is sized from the host’s text width or chosen by a typeface verdict.

  • Width-sized ghost fonts now keep the user’s size multiplier.

…le sizes it

The system face scaled to a field's adopted width sample, and the face a
typeface verdict settled on, were built at the host's size and never took
the ghost size multiplier that GhostFontResolver.resolve applies. At a 60%
multiplier Claude's composer rendered its ghost at 15.7pt instead of 9.4,
and HostFaceMemory kept 15.7 for the style, so later launches started there.

Walkthrough

Typeface evidence resolution separates the host font size from the user’s ghost-text size multiplier. It applies the multiplier to settled system and family matches, scaled-system results, and relevant fallback results.

Changes: Typeface evidence size resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Derive host size and pass multiplier
Cotabby/Services/Presentation/OverlayController.swift
When no size is reported, resolution derives the host size by dividing the resolved size by the multiplier. It passes the multiplier to settled and scaled-system resolution.
Apply multiplier to scaled system faces
Cotabby/Services/Presentation/OverlayController.swift, CotabbyTests/Services/Presentation/OverlayControllerTypefaceTests.swift
Scaled system faces apply the multiplier to results with no width sample, width-derived results, and zoom-ladder-snapped results. Tests cover sampled sizing, zoom snapping, and undecidable resolution.

Nitpick Use a sample within the zoom-snap tolerance.

Use a sample within the zoom-snap tolerance.

A 15.7-point sample is 4.67% from the nearest Chrome ladder step, so HostZoomLadder.snappedSize returns nil with its 1% tolerance. The current assertion therefore exercises only the unsnapped multiplier path.

Use 15.06 points. It is within tolerance of the reported 15-point step, so assert the snapped result after applying the multiplier:

Update the sample size in the OverlayControllerTypefaceTests evidence setup to
15.06 points so it falls within HostZoomLadder.snappedSize’s tolerance for the
15-point step. Update the related expected font sizes to use 15.06 for the
unsnapped paths and assert the snapped result is 15 points scaled by the
multiplier.

The 15.7pt sample is 4.7% off the reported 15, beyond the ladder's 1%
tolerance, so the snap branch never ran. A 15.0621pt sample snaps to 15,
and the ghost must be exactly 15 x 0.6.
