The itomig-ai-base extension provides fundamental functionality for integrating artificial intelligence into iTop. It enables interaction with APIs from various AI providers and serves as a foundation for additional features that can be implemented in other extensions. The extension uses the LLPhant Library for unified API communication across different AI providers.
Note: This extension is developed jointly with Combodo, the creator of iTop.
- Mistral (
ai_engine.name: "MistralAI") - OpenAI and OpenAI-compatible providers (
ai_engine.name: "OpenAI") - including Open-WebUI, LocalAI, etc. - Ollama (
ai_engine.name: "OllamaAI") - Anthropic (
ai_engine.name: "AnthropicAI")
Note for Developers: While we estimate this extension suitable for production use, we do not guarantee backward compatibility across version updates. Breaking changes may be introduced in future releases to improve the architecture and functionality. We recommend reviewing the #version-history and release notes before updating to a new version, especially when integrating this extension into your own iTop extensions.
- iTop version 3.2.1 or higher
- PHP 8.2 minimum. The upper bound is iTop's rather than this extension's, so it depends on your iTop version:
| iTop version | Usable PHP versions |
|---|---|
| 3.2.1 – 3.2.2 | 8.2 or 8.3 (iTop does not support 8.4 there) |
| 3.2.3-1 and higher | 8.2 to 8.4 |
Breaking change as of 26.3.0: PHP 8.1 is no longer supported.
Earlier versions ran on PHP 8.1. The bundled
openai-php/clientnow usesreadonly class, which is PHP 8.2 syntax, in code on the path of every API call — on PHP 8.1 the extension does not degrade, it fails to load with a parse error. Check your PHP version before updating. PHP 8.1 reached end of life in December 2025 and receives no security fixes.There is no upper bound on this extension's side: this code and its bundled dependencies parse cleanly on 8.4. Whether you may use 8.4 is decided by iTop — 8.4 support arrived in iTop 3.2.3-1; on 3.2.x before that, iTop reports known issues with it. See the iTop requirements.
- Extract the extension to your iTop extensions directory (e.g.,
extensions/itomig-ai-base) - Run iTop setup and select this extension to enable it
- Configure the extension in your iTop configuration file (see Configuration section below)
Configuration is done in the iTop configuration file (config-itop.php). The configuration is stored in the itomig-ai-base module settings and varies depending on the AI provider used.
'itomig-ai-base' => array(
'ai_engine.name' => 'MistralAI',

),The extension comes with default system prompts for common tasks. You can override these with custom instructions to influence the behavior of your chosen AI engine and LLM:
Available built-in prompts:

Configuration example:
'itomig-ai-base' => array(
'ai_engine.name' => 'OllamaAI',
'ai_engine.configuration' => array(

1. Check spelling and grammar and correct any errors.
2. Reword the text in a polite and professional language.
3. Be sure to keep the meaning and intention of the original text.
4. Do not change the original language of the text.
5. Do not add anything (like explanations for example) before the improved text.
Output the improved text as the answer.',
),
),
),Tip: LLMs can generate structured JSON output when instructed appropriately in the system prompt. This can be very helpful when implementing custom features, especially when working with smaller LLMs. The AIBaseHelper::cleanJSON() method can help clean up JSON responses wrapped in markdown code blocks.
System Prompt Priority Order:
- System prompts passed to the AIService constructor (highest priority)
- System prompts configured in the module settings (
system_promptskey) - Built-in default system prompts (lowest priority)
-
iAIEngineInterface: Contract that all AI engines must implement with three key methods:
GetEngineName(): Returns a unique string identifier for the engineGetEngine($configuration): Static factory method to instantiate an engineGetCompletion($message, $systemInstruction): Performs the actual LLM call
-
GenericAIEngine: Abstract base class containing common properties (url, apiKey, model)
-
Concrete Engine Implementations:
- OpenAIEngine
- AnthropicAIEngine
- MistralAIEngine
- OllamaAIEngine
The engine layer uses iTop's InterfaceDiscovery system to locate available engines at runtime.
New in 26.3.0. A separate engine hierarchy for generating vector embeddings, independent of the chat engine layer above — a consumer needing both wires up one of each.
- iEmbeddingEngineInterface: Contract for embedding engines (
GetEngineName(),GetEngine($configuration),GetEmbeddingGenerator()) - GenericEmbeddingEngine: Abstract base class holding url, API key, model and vector dimensions
- OpenAIEmbeddingEngine: The only concrete implementation so far. Selects the matching LLPhant generator for the well-known OpenAI embedding models (
text-embedding-ada-002,text-embedding-3-small,text-embedding-3-large) and falls back to a generic OpenAI-compatible generator (OpenAICompatibleGenerator) for any other model name, so self-hosted OpenAI-compatible endpoints work as well
Unlike the chat engines, embedding engines are not discovered via InterfaceDiscovery and are not wired to any module.itomig-ai-base.php configuration block — a consumer extension instantiates one directly with its own configuration array (url, api_key, model, dimensions) and passes it to EmbeddingService.
-
AIService: Main service class that other iTop extensions should use. Responsibilities:
- Engine instantiation from configuration
- System prompt management with built-in prompts
- Response cleaning (removes
<think>tags from reasoning models) - JSON markdown block cleanup
- Multi-turn conversation support with context retention
- Function/tool calling, opt-in per call (see
ContinueConversation()) - Security protection against system message injection
- Provides both high-level and low-level API methods
-
EmbeddingService (
src/Service/EmbeddingService.php): New in 26.3.0. Thin wrapper around aniEmbeddingEngineInterfaceengine's LLPhant generator. ProvidesGetEmbedding(string $sMessage): arrayfor a single text,GetEmbeddingsForTexts(array $aTexts): arrayfor a batch keyed by the caller's own array keys, andGetEmbeddingsForChunkedTexts(array $aChunkedTexts): arrayfor pre-chunked documents (nested by chunk number).GetEmbeddingGeneratorMaxBatchSize()andGetEmbeddingLength()expose the engine's batching limit and vector dimensionality. Intended for consumer extensions building retrieval/similarity features (e.g. semantic search over tickets or FAQ entries); this extension does not persist or index embeddings itself.
- AIBaseHelper (
src/Helper/AIBaseHelper.php): Utility functions for AI interactionscleanJSON(string $sRawString): Removes\``json\nand\n```` markers from AI-generated JSONremoveThinkTag(string $sRawString): Removes<think>tags from reasoning model outputsstripHTML(string $sString): Removes HTML tags and decodes HTML entities
AI-Base is used to process content that may contain attacker-controlled text (ticket descriptions, customer chat messages, object attributes, etc.). The extension applies several defenses against prompt-injection attacks; downstream extensions should be aware of them to avoid undoing them.
- System-message filtering in conversation history:
ContinueConversation()removes anyrole: systementries from the caller-supplied history by default, allowing through only entries whose content is listed in an explicit$aAllowedSystemMessageswhitelist. - Opt-in function calling: tools are attached only when the caller passes them explicitly via
$aTools. Passing$oObjectfor context does not auto-attach object tools.getDefaultTools()is provided for callers that intentionally want the previously broad default set. - Hardened default system prompt: the built-in
defaultsystem instruction tells the model to treat any content retrieved from user messages, tool outputs, or iTop object attributes as data rather than instructions, and not to call tools or disclose information based on directives embedded in such content. - Read-only tool set: the shipped
AIObjectToolsprovider exposes read-only methods only. No setter, stimulus, orDBWritecall is reachable through function calling. - Tool-round hard cap: the multi-step tool loop is capped at 20 rounds to bound cost and prevent runaway recursion.
AI-Base does not moderate content itself, but it provides the extension point for doing so. An extension that implements Itomig\iTop\Extension\AIBase\Contracts\iAIGuardrail is discovered automatically via InterfaceDiscovery and is then consulted on every AI call — no registration and no changes to calling code are required.
Four points are screened:
| Direction | Where | What |
|---|---|---|
DIRECTION_SYSTEM_PROMPT |
both, once per call, before the input | The assembled system prompt |
DIRECTION_INPUT |
GetCompletion(), ContinueConversation() |
The prompt, respectively the latest user turn |
DIRECTION_OUTPUT |
both, after the engine call | The model's answer, with think-tags removed |
DIRECTION_TOOL_RESULT |
ContinueConversation(), per tool call |
The tool's return value, before it re-enters the history |
DIRECTION_SYSTEM_PROMPT needs a word of explanation, since the configured system prompt is a trusted source. What is screened is not the configured template but what it has become by the time it is sent. Two things change it at runtime: placeholder substitution — PerformSystemInstruction() already applies sprintf() to the translate instruction — and consumers appending data, as itomig-ai-response does with ticket JSON. The prompt is constant for the duration of a call, so it is screened once per call rather than per turn or per tool round.
$oService = new AIService();
$oService->setSurface('ticket.summarize'); // lets the guardrail pick a policy set
$sSummary = $oService->PerformSystemInstruction($sPrompt, 'summarizeTicket');setSurface() is optional; callers that omit it are treated as surface default.
Three properties matter for implementers:
IsEnabledFor()must be cheap and must not perform I/O. It runs on every AI call and is the only thing preventing a needless round trip for callers that never wanted a guardrail.- Guardrail failures are fail-open. Any exception thrown by an implementation is logged via
IssueLog::Errorand the AI call proceeds. Blocking is expressed by returning aGuardrailVerdictwithblocked = true, which surfaces to the caller asAIGuardrailBlockedException. A guardrail outage must not take down every AI feature. - Both methods receive the active iTop context tags as
$aContext['itop_context'], read fromContextTag::GetStack()—['GUI:Console'],['CRON'],['REST/JSON']and so on. This answers a different question than the surface:ticket.summarizemay be triggered by an agent in the console or by a background job with nobody reviewing the result, and a guardrail may want to screen more strictly underGUI:Portalthan underGUI:Console. An empty stack is a normal state, not an error — not every entry point sets a tag — so treat it as "channel unknown".
Note for implementers that PHP requires an implementation to declare every parameter an interface method declares, including the optional ones. IsEnabledFor(string $sSurface, string $sDirection, array $aContext = []) must therefore be written with all three parameters even if $aContext is ignored.
A reference implementation using Mistral Shieldstral ships as the separate itomig-ai-guardrail extension.
See issue #49 for the full threat model. Currently out of scope in this layer:
- No content moderation is performed by this layer itself. It provides the
iAIGuardrailhook (see above); the policies and the classifier live in a separate extension. - Indirect prompt injection via tool outputs (tool poisoning) is not fully mitigated by the layer's own defenses. Use a narrow, purpose-built
$aToolslist in sensitive contexts instead ofgetDefaultTools(); a guardrail onDIRECTION_TOOL_RESULTcan add a second line of defense. - There is no per-user / per-tool access control. Every caller of
ContinueConversation()gets the same tool visibility — do not expose tools that read privileged data from low-trust user sessions. - User messages and tool outputs are not wrapped in an "untrusted content" delimiter that the system prompt could reference structurally.
Downstream extensions that process untrusted content should also take care not to store raw AI responses (which may contain attacker-shaped payloads) back into fields that a malicious author would then read.
public function GetCompletion(string $sMessage, string $sSystemInstruction = ''): stringSends a user message to the AI and returns the response. Optionally includes a custom system prompt to guide the AI's behavior.
Parameters:
$sMessage: The user's prompt/question$sSystemInstruction: (Optional) Custom system prompt for the AI
Returns: The AI's response as a string
public function PerformSystemInstruction(string $message, string $sInstructionName): stringPerforms a completion using one of the predefined system prompts (translate, improveText, default, or custom ones).
Parameters:
$message: The user's prompt/message$sInstructionName: The name/identifier of the system prompt to use
Returns: The AI's response as a string
public function addSystemInstruction(string $sInstructionName, string $sInstruction): voidAdds or overrides a system prompt dynamically at runtime.
Parameters:
$sInstructionName: The name/identifier for the new system prompt$sInstruction: The content of the system prompt
public function ContinueConversation(
array $aHistory,
?DBObject $oObject = null,
?string $sCustomSystemMessage = null,
?array $aAllowedSystemMessages = null,
array $aTools = []
): arrayContinues a multi-turn conversation by maintaining context across multiple exchanges with the AI, with optional function/tool calling.
Parameters:
$aHistory: Array of conversation history. Each entry hasrole(user/assistant) andcontent$oObject: (Optional) iTop object context. When set, context-aware tool providers receive it viasetContext(). Passing$oObjectdoes not by itself attach any tools — see$aTools.$sCustomSystemMessage: (Optional) Custom system message for this turn$aAllowedSystemMessages: (Optional) Whitelist of allowed system messages from historynull(default): System messages in history are filteredarray: Only system messages with content in this array are allowed
$aTools: (Optional) Array ofFunctionInfoobjects for function calling. Opt-in by default (empty array): no tools are attached unless the caller passes them explicitly. This reduces the prompt-injection surface for use cases that only need text processing (e.g. summarization). Callers that want the full discovered tool set can pass$oAIService->getDefaultTools($oObject).
Returns: an AIResult value object (Itomig\iTop\Extension\AIBase\Result\AIResult) with two readonly properties:
response: The AI's response (cleaned, without internal reasoning tags)history: Updated conversation history (including the new response)
AIResult implements ArrayAccess, so existing code written against the pre-26.3.0 plain-array return ($aResult['response'], $aResult['history']) keeps working unchanged — all examples in this README use that form. New code can use the typed properties directly ($aResult->response, $aResult->history). Breaking for type-hinted callers: a caller that declared array $aResult = $oAIService->ContinueConversation(...) or otherwise relied on is_array($aResult) being true needs to update the type, since AIResult is an object, not an array.
Security: System messages from user-provided history are filtered by default to prevent prompt injection. Tools are opt-in to avoid silently exposing them to injected instructions in user-controlled content. See the Security Model section and issue #49 for the full threat model.
public function getDefaultTools(?DBObject $oObject = null): arrayConvenience helper that returns the broad default tool set: all always-available tools (AISystemTools), plus all context-dependent tools (AIObjectTools) when an object is passed. Use together with ContinueConversation() when the full discovered tool set is actually desired; prefer a narrower hand-picked list otherwise.
Credential-bearing attributes are withheld. The get_attribute tool returns an empty string for AttributePassword, AttributeEncryptedString and AttributeOneWayPassword, and logs the fact at Info level without logging the value. External fields are resolved to their target first, so an AttributeExternalField pointing at a password — MailInboxOAuth::client_secret targets OAuthClient::client_secret — is caught too. This is enforced in AIObjectTools rather than left to the calling extension, because the tools are generic over any DBObject, and classes such as OAuthClient, MailInboxBase and RemoteiTopConnection do carry password attributes.
Two limits you must plan around:
- It filters by attribute type, so a secret stored in a plain text attribute is not caught.
OAuthClient::tokenand::refresh_tokenareAttributeTextand hold live OAuth tokens — those still reach the model. There is no way for a type-based filter to know better; if a context class keeps secrets in string or text attributes, do not pass that class as context. - It is not an authorisation check. No
UserRightsverification takes place, so the tools read whatever the context object exposes regardless of the current user's attribute permissions. Do not pass an object the user should not be able to read.
Reading several attributes outside of tool-calling? Use AIObjectTools::GetFilteredAttributeValues(DBObject $oObject, ?array $aAttCodes = null): array rather than MetaModel::ListAttributeDefs() + Get() in a loop. It applies the exact same credential filter as get_attribute() — sharing the check means a consumer collecting multiple attributes for a display panel or a hand-built prompt cannot reintroduce the leak by forgetting to filter. Deliberately not a public IsSensitiveAttribute() — that would still leave every caller responsible for remembering to call it. GetFilteredAttributeValues() is a public static method, so it can be called without an AIObjectTools instance or object context:
use Itomig\iTop\Extension\AIBase\Helper\AIObjectTools;
$aValues = AIObjectTools::GetFilteredAttributeValues($oTicket, ['title', 'description', 'caller_id']);
// $aValues === ['title' => '...', 'description' => '...', 'caller_id' => '...']
// A credential-bearing attribute in the list would map to '', not its value.use Itomig\iTop\Extension\AIBase\Service\AIService;

Community Extensions: If you have developed an iTop extension using itomig-ai-base and would like to be listed here, please submit a pull request to this README file.
A comprehensive tutorial demonstrating how to build AI-powered features for iTop using itomig-ai-base is available at:
itomig-ai-explain-oql - Shows a practical example of implementing an AI feature that explains OQL queries
-
UI Impact: The extension itself has no impact on the graphical user interface and only provides basic functionality. AI features must be implemented in separate extensions.
-
Task-Specific Engines: Currently, it is not possible to configure different LLMs or different engines depending on the task. All requests use the single configured engine.
-
Advanced Parameters: Some AI providers support parameters like
temperatureandnum_ctxto fine-tune LLM behavior. These are currently not configurable through the iTop configuration. See #41 for planned improvements. -
Async Interactions: There is currently no support for asynchronous interaction with LLMs. This may be added in a later version.
For local deployment with Ollama, we have had positive experiences with the following models. Quality is generally good when using models in the 12-14b parameter range in 4-bit quantization. Smaller 7-8b models also work well but with reduced quality.
Recommended Models:
-
Qwen Series (Alibaba)
- Qwen2.5 (14b) - Excellent general-purpose model
- Qwen3 (4b-instruct) - Lightweight, good for resource-constrained setups
- Qwen3 (8b) - Balanced quality and performance
- Qwen3 (14b) - Best quality in Qwen series
-
Microsoft Models
- Phi4 (14b) - Excellent quality, strong instruction following
-
Mistral Models
- Mistral-Nemo (12b) - Good quality, optimized for performance
-
Google Models
- Gemma3 (12b-it-qat) - Solid performance and quality
When using commercial AI services (OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral), you can typically achieve satisfactory results with smaller model variants to benefit from:
- Faster inference speed
- Reduced costs
- Sufficient quality for most iTop-related tasks
If you decide to run LLMs locally with Ollama:
Memory Requirements:
- 12-14b models in Q4 quantization need approximately 9 GB of (V)RAM, plus additional memory for context processing
- Use this VRAM estimator to calculate exact requirements
- For processing user requests in iTop, context windows typically don't need to exceed 16,384 tokens
Performance Considerations:
- A GPU is essential for satisfactory inference speed
- A consumer-grade NVIDIA RTX card with 12 GB VRAM performs quite well
- CPU-only inference is possible but will be slow
Context Window Sizing: Most iTop use cases work well with standard context window sizes. Larger contexts are rarely necessary unless processing very large ticket histories or documents.

All dependencies are committed to the repository and included in the extension package. End users do not need to run composer.
For developers only. Because vendor/ is committed, how you invoke composer ends up in the release. Always use:
php8.2 composer update --no-dev --prefer-dist # or: install
composer audit --no-dev # must report no advisoriesEach flag prevents a defect that has actually occurred in this repository:
--no-dev— without it, composer writes dev entries into the generated autoload files, andphpstanends up referenced from a production release.--prefer-dist—--prefer-sourceclones package repositories, which bypasses theirexport-ignorerules and drags their test suites in. This is where 6.1 MB of tiktoken fixtures came from (see #69).php8.2— resolution follows the PHP version running composer, so a newer interpreter can pick packages that need more than our documented 8.2 minimum.config.platform.phpincomposer.jsonpins this as a backstop; running 8.2 makes it true by construction.composer audit— a targeted update must include transitive constraints. Updating onlyguzzleandpsr7silently stopped at an unpatched version because the fix also requiredpromises; the audit is what catches that.
After adding a class under src/, run composer dump-autoload -o and commit the regenerated classmap with it. classmap-authoritative is enabled, so there is no PSR-4 fallback and a missing entry is a fatal error at runtime, not a slow path (see #55).
Included Dependencies:
composer-runtime-api: ^2.0theodo-group/llphant: ^1.0(locked at1.0.1) — major upgrade as of 26.3.0, up from^0.10.1. This library provides the chat, tool-calling and embedding abstractions this extension builds on (EmbeddingGeneratorInterface,Document,FunctionInfo, the provider-specific chat classes). If your own extension calls LLPhant classes directly rather than only going throughAIService/EmbeddingService, check LLPhant's own changelog for breaking changes between 0.10 and 1.0 before updating.
To add support for a new AI provider:
-
Create a new class in
src/Engine/that:- Extends
GenericAIEngine - Implements
iAIEngineInterface
- Extends
-
Implement the four required methods of
iAIEngineInterface:GetEngineName(): Return a unique string identifierGetEngine($configuration): Static factory returning an instance with the provided configurationGetCompletion($message, $systemInstruction): Perform a single-turn LLM API call, returning a stringGetNextTurn($aHistory, $aTools = []): New as of 26.3.0. Generates the next turn given the full message history (as LLPhantMessage[]) and, optionally,FunctionInfo[]tools for function calling. Returns astringfor a plain text reply orFunctionInfo[]when the model chose to call one or more tools. This is whatContinueConversation()calls internally; an engine that only implementsGetCompletion()cannot support multi-turn conversations or tool calling. A custom engine written before 26.3.0 must add this method —iAIEngineInterfacegained it as a required member, so an existing implementation now fails to instantiate with a fatal "class must implement abstract method" error.
-
Use LLPhant's configuration and chat classes for provider integration
-
The engine will be automatically discovered via iTop's InterfaceDiscovery system
AIService automatically processes all responses:
- Removes
<think>tags from reasoning models usingAIBaseHelper::removeThinkTag() - Cleans JSON markdown blocks using
AIBaseHelper::cleanJSON()
If adding additional response processing, add it to the AIBaseHelper class.

Breaking changes:
- PHP 8.1 is no longer supported; PHP 8.2 is now the minimum. The bundled
openai-php/clientuses PHP 8.2readonly classsyntax on the path of every API call — on 8.1 the extension fails to load with a parse error rather than degrading. See Prerequisites for the PHP/iTop compatibility table. ContinueConversation()now returns anAIResultobject instead of a plain array. Backward compatible for callers using$result['response']/$result['history'](viaArrayAccess); breaking for callers that type-hinted oris_array()-checked the return value.- Tools are opt-in only. Passing
$oObjectfor context no longer auto-attachesAIObjectTools. Callers that relied on the previous implicit tool set must now pass$oAIService->getDefaultTools($oObject)explicitly toContinueConversation(). - Custom AI engines must implement the new
GetNextTurn()method oniAIEngineInterface. An engine written before 26.3.0 that implements onlyGetCompletion()fails to instantiate.
New:
- Function calling / tool use with multi-turn support (opt-in, see
ContinueConversation()). Shipped tools (AIObjectTools,AISystemTools) are read-only. iAIGuardrailextension point (Itomig\iTop\Extension\AIBase\Contracts\iAIGuardrail): a content-moderation contract that screens all four AI touch points —DIRECTION_SYSTEM_PROMPT,DIRECTION_INPUT,DIRECTION_OUTPUT,DIRECTION_TOOL_RESULT— discovered automatically viaInterfaceDiscovery, fail-open on implementer error. This did not exist inv26.1.1, so it breaks no already-released consumer; see Guardrails for the full contract anditomig-ai-guardrailfor a reference implementation (Mistral Shieldstral). Consumer extensions that declare a guardrail (itomig-ai-guardrail,itomig-ai-response,itomig-ai-ticketing-base) need theiritomig-ai-basedependency raised to26.3.0to get this contract.- Embedding engine and service layer (
OpenAIEmbeddingEngine,EmbeddingService) for extensions building retrieval/similarity features. See Architecture and Using Embeddings. - Credential-bearing attributes (
AttributePassword,AttributeEncryptedString,AttributeOneWayPassword, including through resolved external fields) are withheld from the model byget_attribute. AIObjectTools::GetFilteredAttributeValues(): apublic staticbulk attribute reader sharingget_attribute()'s credential filter, for any consumer reading several attributes off aDBObjectoutside of tool-calling (e.g. a diagnostics or admin display panel). SeeAIService::getDefaultTools().
Security:
