game.AddParticle is being called on all pcf files which eats VRAM #1465

Open

Description

@Python1320

Loading all PCF files preloads also all textures from them into VRAM. This is not a problem on windows as it just swaps them out but on linux the vram swap is not functional so it takes a lot of vram for no reason.

There is a VERY early experiment in #1464 to mitigate this.

Unfortunately addons also load all CPF files, such as https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3684885115

NOTE: -noprecache does not appear work

Validate: (TF2 mounted)

  1. execute +mat_texture_list
  2. Select checkbox "ALL textures"
  3. search for butterfly1 (if it exists then TF2 textures from the particles are being loaded)

Alternatively:

  1. Add command line args -condebug -conclearlog
  2. Go ingame with PAC enabled
  3. search for butterfly1 in garrysmod/console.log

    It seems we can maybe also get rid of serverside precaching with CreateParticleSystemNoEntity ( Facepunch/garrysmod-requests#3308 (comment) )
