🌐 Global Search

GitHub Repo stars Discord License Last Commit

A powerful Vencord plugin that lets you search messages globally across Discord lightning fast, context-rich, and easy to use without clobbering the discord API.

Star this repo if you want me to get it added to the official vencord client.

🚀 Features

  • 🔍 Global search across DMs, group DMs, and optionally all servers you belong to
  • ⚡ Instant results with context snippets
  • 🧩 Lightweight & seamless Vencord integration
  • 🔥 Cool looking README that is mostly generated by ChatGPT

📥 Installation

Global Search is a custom user plugin. You need a Vencord build from source (Discord desktop, Vesktop, or browser). The official installer alone does not load arbitrary plugins from this repo.

Prerequisites

If you have not built Vencord before, follow the Installing from source guide through pnpm install, pnpm build, and pnpm inject (close Discord first).

Add the plugin

  1. Open your Vencord folder and go to src/userplugins. Create userplugins if it does not exist (custom plugins docs).

  2. Install this repo into that folder as a plugin directory (folder must contain index.ts):

    Windows (PowerShell)

    cd C:\path\to\Vencord\src\userplugins
    git clone https://github.com/Atom1cByte/Global-Search.git globalSearch

    macOS / Linux

    cd ~/Vencord/src/userplugins
    git clone https://github.com/Atom1cByte/Global-Search.git globalSearch

You can use any folder name; globalSearch matches the plugin files in this repo.

  3. Rebuild Vencord from the Vencord root:

    cd C:\path\to\Vencord
    pnpm build

For a browser build, use pnpm buildWeb instead.

  4. Discord desktop: run pnpm inject again if you use a fresh dist output, then restart Discord.

Vesktop: point Vencord Location at your Vencord dist folder (Vesktop settings → Developer settings), then fully restart Vesktop.

  5. In Discord, open User Settings → Vencord → Plugins, find Global Search, enable it, and restart the client when prompted.

Updating

cd C:\path\to\Vencord\src\userplugins\globalSearch
git pull
cd C:\path\to\Vencord
pnpm build

Restart Discord or Vesktop after each update.

📖 How to use

  1. Open any main chat (the plugin adds a control to the chat bar, not thread or side panels).
  2. Click the magnifying glass button (Global Search tooltip) next to the message input.
  3. Choose DMs or All Servers at the top of the modal (server search queries each guild you are in).
  4. Type your query and click Search, or press Enter. Results are sorted by newest first (up to 25 per page).
  5. Click a result to jump to that message; server results show guild and channel names under the snippet.
  6. If more results exist, use Load More at the bottom of the modal.

Tips

  • DMs use Discord’s message search tabs API; All Servers uses per-guild search endpoints and may take longer on large accounts.
  • Empty queries are ignored; wait for Searching... to finish before starting another search unless you are loading the next page.
  • If jump-to-message fails after navigation, check the browser or DevTools console for [MessageSearch] logs (Discord sometimes needs a moment after switching channels).

🤔 How does it work?

The plugin registers a chat-bar button that opens a modal. DM search goes through Vencord’s RestAPI to Discord’s message search tabs endpoint; server-wide search batches guild search requests, merges results, and paginates with cursors/offsets. Blog post on that soon.
